Oh yeah... the first 3 books are pretty much amazing... and the twists and turns!! I don't think I've ever read a series that killed so many 'main' characters before. Book 4... well... you'll get once you read it why maybe its considered 'not as good'... Fantastic series though, probably my top for fantasy.

I believe its supposed to be 7 books in the end.

No kidding. The first four average about 1000 pages.

The biggest problem with the fourth book is that it is only half a book. GRRM ended up splitting it into two books because of its size (!), so only half the story is told at each time. I suspect that is the biggest reason why it is not as good as the first three.
