There was a GM a couple years ago that I did that to more then once. I remember after one blockbuster I got a message from him the next morning that said "Whoa, I traded you player X and player Y last night!?!?"

I still own your pride... That is if you have any left.
Tips for the newbs...
- If you deal with Becky expect to have to give the player back in a week.
- MJK does trade players more often than he changes his underwear.
- Grant sings with his cat. Don't bother him when Mandy is in heat, that is when the best recording sessions happen.
- Cheese is very religious. Do not offend him with blasphemous talk or by taking the lord's name in vain.
- KG cheats when he sims. Bribe him with turtle food for Sandy to get more wins.
- The truth always lies somewhere in between "the Jerk" and Eklunde.
- I am not sure who is older but after meeting both of them I call Cheese Dad and Axel Gramps

Some of these have already been mentioned but...
- Trading a lot can really improve your team.
- Being really patient with young players can also improve your team.
- But don't be in the middle. Either trade a ton, or build your team and be patient while it developes.
- Be on MSN as much as possible.
- Respond to trade offers! On MSN or in emails... respond quickly, even if the answer is no. Sometimes the other GM will have a plan B. The quicker you tell them you aren't interested the quicker they can contact the next GM.
- Don't exaggerate the value of a player. Every GM in this league is pretty smart and knows how good each player is. Don't try to convince another GM that your junk is valuable because it won't help get the trade done.
- Don't ask a GM if you could trade for a player and then point out reasons why that player isn't as valuable as we all know he is.
- Look at what other GM's are doing with their lines. The sim is hard to figure out... your best bet is to copy what the best teams are doing.

Dont leave MSN on when your 9 year old Niece or 11 year old Nephew is over. They tend to start up some good conversations with gm's who think its me. Before you know it you have Barret Jackman on your team instead of Ilya Kovalchuk.

Trade often, but look for win-win deals. Look for a team that is rebuilding and offer them youth with good potential for vets with decent ratings. Or look for teams that are gathering now talent and send your decent vets in exchange for youth with talent.
Never have an untouchable. It bothers me when a GM comes calling, looking for one of my top players, but won't offer up one of his/hers. Of course some players will always be more expensive then others, the challenge is to agree on value.
Don't start a conversation with "what will it take to get ____?" My reply will always be "Fair Value" That doesn't get either of us anywhere. Let me know what you're looking for and ask me what areas I'm trying to address, Defense, Nets, Scoring? Then we can get down to business.
You can transition your club from nothing, to youth, to vets, to youth, to contender in a matter of weeks. If you can find the right people at the right times. It takes a lot of trades, but it doesn't take 2-3 years.
Study the sim. It has a personality all of its own. We can not influence the sim, only work with its idiosynchracies.

There's a psychological principle known as state dependant learning. As I've learned most of the things I know about the CPHL while under the influence of alcohol, I find its best to pass on my knowledge in the same "state".
That being said, its hot, I'm off work for the next two days and the beer is cold. KG wanna trade?
