I just bought a Hard Drive / DVD recorder to replace the recording functionality of the old VCR.# In addition, the HDD recorder works as a Pvr, and allows all the timeslipping functionality.#

How much and what brand did you get? i totally need one. I'm still using a vcr to record stuff and my tapes are getting all old and ragged.[/b][/quote]
I bought the Toshiba RD-XS32. It has an 80 GB Hdd for internal recording and Pvr functionality, and externally records to DVD-RAM, DVD-R/RW, and plays all DVD and CD formats. It has a sticker price of $800 at Future Shop, but I got him down to $600 plus tax. You can get the same unit from http://www.ecost.com for $598 including exchange, taxes and shipping/handling. I didnt have the tiem to wait 10 days for shipping though, as the tv season was starting!

There are other options out there too. Panasonic makes good units. And like I mentioned, there are 120GB versions, both in Toshiba and Panasonic. I would definately stick with one of those two brands. Expect to pay $600 to $800 for any of them. No HDD / DVD recorder does HD TV yet.

Another possible route to go, is a straight Pvr, without the DVD recorder. The only PVR for Shaw is a HD PVR, with an 80 GB drive. They are $800 as well, but you get $100 programming credit from shaw (might have to really fight for it if you are an existing customer). These units would also provide the basic funtionality of a Tivo. What you are lacking here is the ability to take a recording off the device to a recordable media.

Because I dont have a HD TV (yet), and didnt have a working VCR anymore, I deided to buy the HDD/DVD recorder instead of the HD PVR. I wanted some way to store things permanently outside of the unit, and didnt want to pay the premium for the HD. Once I get a HD TV (~18-24 months), I will buy a HD Pvr to be able to record and playback the HD broadcasts. Hopefully by then, Shaw will provide one with a bigger HDD than 80 GB.

A rough guess is there is over 500 DVD's there. I would say he has probably watched that many movies in his life time. Lord knows I have and I am 22.

DVD's for sure, but i've always been incredibly slow at buying new innovations on certain technologies when they come out. Listening to Walkman's when everyone was getting their first discman, starting a VHS collection when DVD's were starting to heat up, etc.

However, it saved me big time when Laserdisks came and went in a flash...

Good guess MMF. About 450 racked, and another 50 odd concerts in a box that isnt visible, and another 300+ VHS elsewhere. Yeah, I am a movie buff....

DVD's but I mostly just download my stuff nowadays instead.

Paying an extra $10 for a DVD with worthless extras is not my cup of tea, nor is having to put up with the new French on the package.

Got a picture picture your DVD's Shawnski? I would love to "look" through your DVD collection to see what you have. I wish I could say I wasn't jealous, but I am. Mine is about 200 now, I have had to really cut back in the last couple of years.

Not a recent one MMF. I will get em done when I get a chance and post em.

I also have cut down big time in the last three years. If you have 200+ at your age, you are doing VERY well!! Good on ya!
