I guess I am and I sure hope my family suffers and suffers alot. I didn't even realise the benefit of their suffering that I recieved from smoking. Makes me want to smoke even more now. Although I guess I better hurry though as I am probably about to die my terrible death.

Yes Ken I was having a bit of fun with your post. Meant to put a smilile there but it didn't work for whatever reason.

What bothers me about people who go outside to smoke, is that in many places they'll be haning around the doors. So if I want to go into the smoke-free building, I have to walk through all the smoke anyway.

I was also just at a clients place (home based business) and she lit a cigarette and didn't bother to ask me if it bothered me. I went to another clients (also home based business) and he had the decency to ask me first. I told him "No, go ahead" and he made very clear that if the smoke bothered me in anyway that he would put it out for me. Which incident do I remember the most? The lady who didn't bother to ask me.

I guess I'm not adding too much, but I just wanted to throw my 3 cents in.

It is illegal in Calgary to smoke within 3m of any public door. You are within your right to ask those people to move out of the 3m zone. After that, you can ask, but they don't have to move.

I have as much sympathy for her as I would for a smoker. If she was so worried about the affects of smoking than she should have gotten a job somewhere else, If I'm deathly allergic to peanuts I'm not going to work at a bar.

If you are referring to the story of firefighters in Nepean (a former suburb of Ottawa) that had/have been dying of cancer that were denied the benefits they should receive if they were injured on the job. The group of firefighters who got cancer even though they didn't have any of the risk factors associated with getting cancer had no connection other then they all worked out of the same fire station.

It hasn't been proven what has caused this group to get cancer although the fire station they worked at has had a strange smell in it from day one.

It doesnt work that way buddy. Read my previous post. Should we then say to companies. "Dont worry about any safety equipment. If your employees dont like it they can work else were" Nice one. Think before you speak.

Maybe your employer should take all your safety rules and equipment away from you and say if you dont like it go find another job.

A lot of provinces are now covering these cancers for firefighters.

However...someone who doesn't want to take the risk of falling 40 floors to their death, doesn't wash highrise windows. Everyone knows the dangers of smoke. There are plenty of other types of jobs out there that don't pose those types of risks. You don't want those dangers...don't work there.

I suppose the one thing is that second hand smoke isn't as much of a risk to a smoker as it is to a non-smoker; meaning that a smoker is exposed to smoke anyways, so it would be hard to determine if the second hand smoke was the cause of a cancer as opposed to the first hand stuff.

But I know myself one of the reasons I quit working at bars when I was younger was because of the smoke. And part of that has to do with governments not wanting to step in and mandate workplace safety. I suppose in 19 months it will be a moot point.
