I'm pretty sure it has to do with the physical size of the receiver and tuner required for a quality AM reception. Most portable headphone radios rely upon the mass of the headphone wires & earpieces to act as an antenna and the current trend of ear bud style headphones don't lend themselves towards this. AM doesn't sound that great at its best so why would a manufacturer double the weight of their portable sound system for a low demand transmission frequency (let's face it, AM isn't exactly cutting edge) that can only be reliably picked up outdoors while standing on the top of a hill?

Are you that insecure?? I got a 60gig 5th Gen and love it. I love the control, light weight, great screen. Amazingly fast transfer rates. I didn't buy it to be "Popular"

Give me a break.

How does that relate to insecurity? I don't honestly get it.

People have their own personal taste, I'm only voicing my own opinion on the matter. This is the secoind F***ing time I've been flamed for voicing opinion on the forum.

Last thing, Trasnfer rates don't depend too much on the device but more on the actual computer itself and how fast it is able to transfer information from one place to another. USB is more ideal as it is widely used, but firewire (which I don't have) is actually faster.

Its amazing that Ipods have completely dominated market share. There are some decent, and arguably better alternatives out there. But Ipods are good (at least the larger capacity ones, not sure about shuffle). I have only ever owned creative products, and have always been happy with them. When I compare my Zen Xtra to my brothers Ipod, I'd say they're pretty close. They both sound the same on my headphones. I'd give a slight advantage to the Zen in playlist functionality. But I'd give a big advantage to the Ipod for a more compact/elegent design. It depends what's important to you. For straight up value however, I think creative is the way to go. When I bought mine it was about $150 cheaper than the comparable Ipod, yet was the more feature rich player. Supposedly the new Zen Vision has way more options than the latest Ipod Video. If I was buying I would definitely research first, don't just go Ipod automatically.

Apple doesn't even make the shuffle anymore. Instead they went with a 1GB Nano.

Where did you hear/read that? You can still order them from Apples web site.

I cant comment on the Shuffle, but I convinced my parents to switch to Telus for Internet and as azn added bonus I got a Nano, I absolutely love the thing. My onlyu problem is the software, I will plug the Nano in to charge it no problem, the iTunes comes up and yet the Nano only gets recognized maybe 1/3 times.

Very Strange - 2 Gb of music is almost the perfect amount, I would have prefered a 5 gb but .

Does anyone know of any cases for them. I dont like the preppy cases apple has, I would prefer no one knows I have an iPod. I tried getting this one arm band case off ebay and it broke the 3rd time I used it - thankfully it was only for 99 cents + 5$ shipping

Perhaps it is just the 1GB ones, but I doubt there will be much demand for the 512MB ones with the price dropping on solid state memory like it has been.

(although now that I look the 1GB are in stock again)

My brother owns one. It is the most incredible little thing I have ever seen. He downloaded 3 whole seasons of the Simpsons, 4 movies, and about 5 other TV series and watched them in class when he's bored. And obviously, he's got music too.

From what I've seen, it's really good quality, extremely customizable (for example, you can get someone to create a background theme for your iRiver using a combination of pictures you provide) and it doesn't have lame software that crashes all the time like iPod.

I think he paid about $300 for it or something but that was about a year ago.

Compared to every other pair of earbud headphones I was amazed by the Apple headphones. I think they sound great. I haven't really dipped into the market so the you get better earbuds other than apples?

But it does work occasionally. My computer also has better requirements than necessary. I've checked them all.

Maybe it is some kind of software conflict on my PC, but that doesn't excuse the incredibly poor and patronizing Apple customer service. There are numerous people on their forums having the same or similar problems, and Apple has not addressed the issue at all.

If they feel the problem is on my computer, then they should come right out and say it. I'd much rather have them tell me that I'm SOL than to string me along, and having me try over and over again to make it work.

When your "opinion" implies that people are only buying iPods to be popular, you open yourself to be-yach slapped back in return. Access to iTunes might be important for some people that don't d/l music.

With the pricing as close between a Shuffle and a Nano, I don't know why you'd go for the Shuffle. Heck, with the pricing between a 4GB Nano as close as it is to the 40GB full iPod, I should really go for the 40GB. But that's probably how Apple wants me to think...

Well it may be the trend and it may be popular, but darn it I'm going to enjoy my Shuffle just the same.

It's suited to people that like to listen to music randomly, which is perfect for me.

I did have one major complaint when I first started using it - iTunes sucks. Alot.

However, seeing as how it's an iPod and iPod = popular, there are about a gazillion other people out there that also like iPods and hate iTunes. Therefore there are tons of little applications and utilities for the iPod to do everything short of turning it into a Ferrari - including bypassing the need for iTunes.

I guess being trendy has its advantages.

Well, I haven't tried it, but I read that the latest version of Winamp has the ability to sync with iPod. And if that doesn't work I know that for a while there have been winamp plugins. link

I believe foobar has some iPod plug-ins as well.

Perhaps give a few of those a try.
