They'd just buy it from another source.
And we'd just sell it to someone else who was previously buying from the place the Americans switched to.
The two would balance out and make little difference one way or the other.
That's why its called "a global market."
If that's a surprise to The Sierra Club . . . . . . oh wait, are they suggesting we just stop selling oil altogether? Yeah, that would sure teach the Yanks a lesson.

Nope, sorry Fotze, but lots of companies are making a pretty good penny off of shale gas.
The Barnette (sp?) shale in Texas for example is a huge play that is making hundreds of millions of cubic feet per day.

I bet there were some Americans that thought, hey, why are we wasting our time sending troops to the middle east, we can just take over Canada!

That's depressing (for me) if true....

I know lots of people who have experience and ties to Fort Mac.
It's likely he was telling the truth. That kid probably has a crew underneath him and he works a crap load of OT.
If I were 22 I'd be thinking of working up there. And, as long as you can stay off the meth, you'll be able to save a ton of cash as there isn't a lot to do with your money. How many $50,000 pickups do you need at that age.

There is a poster on this off-topic board who told us last year that American paratroopers would someday be raining on Fort McMurray.
It seems simpler just to buy the oil.

I grew up in the Fort and there's not enough money on the planet to get me back up there. And I can vouch that it's easy to get that kind of coin at either Suncor or Syncrude. Guys used to have competitions to see who the first person to $100,000 would be (and this was 15 years ago, when I worked a few summers at the plants). Yes, you gotta work OT, but if you really want to scrimp and save for a few years, you could do very well and get the hell out of there.

Yeah, the problem is what it'll cost you to live up there though.
I've got a buddy who just moved up there, and he's paying $2000/month for a basement suite. Granted the company he works for is picking up most of that cost, but I don't think that's the case for most folks.
Sure if you can live cheap in camp, and you make $125 k you can do pretty good, but if you've got to pay your own way, you're not as far ahead as you think.
That being said, even if you are spending $25k a year on rent, you can still save up quite a bit if you're making $125k/year.

I've never been there, but I gotta ask...
Is there any actual WOMEN up there? (I mean, besides the snaggle tooth bush women and one eyed prostitutes)?
And if so, what the hell are they doing up there? I kinda get the impression that the entire town is a bunch of dudes wandering around town in coveralls an hardhats.

A couple of cousins of mine - male and female - have lived there for decades in nice homes, one working as a bus driver to the oilsands and the other as a veterinary tech while her husband is at Suncor. Raised their families there without problem.
It' not a bad place necessarily . . . . . it's the pressures that are being brought to bear by local governments not allowing additional housing and infrastructure that might be the problem. People necessary to the functioning of the Oilsands shouldn't have to fly in on a weekly basis or live in the bush.
Combine that with its status as a typical boom town for young transients and all the problems that can come from that segment of the population.
Fort McMurray is a great place for young people to go and get a start in life . . . . but I don't think I'd want to live there past 30 years of age. I said that about Grande Prairie too . . . . and I left when I was 27.

I left at 25, and just in time. The infrastructure was poor then and just over 10 years later, it's even worse. The population is more than double, the highway to get there is still not doubled, housing problems are abundant, etc.

No women. everyone has to spend one night a month in the "barrel"
Not only that, there are only 2 or maybe 3 golf courses.
