Had to go with Fleury, he may be a little out there. But he was a hell of a hockey player drafted in the 8th round. I think most would have to agree he was one Top 5 Flame.

I think ultimately- just not sure on order he, Hull and MacInnis had the best careers at the highest level available to them at the time

I voted for Niewendyk. Looking at his awards though, looks like his all-star appearances were pretty sparse. I guess lots of competition in his day?

Chopper, his shot was feared league wide. Never should have traded him.

He’s a nutcase, but it’s hard not to go with a guy who was drafted in the 8th round and was the all-time franchise leader in points when he left the team.

Wasn't their choice.
He signed or was going to sign an offer sheet with St. Louis. Flames worked out a forced trade.
Quote:
Following five consecutive seasons where the Flames failed to advance past the first round of the playoffs, both MacInnis and the team were looking for a change in the summer of 1994.[21] Though the Flames made an offer of C$2.5 million per season for MacInnis, he instead signed an offer sheet with the St. Louis Blues for US$3.5 million a season for four years, making him the fourth highest-paid player in the NHL.[22] As MacInnis was a restricted free agent, the Blues sent defenceman Phil Housley and two second round draft picks to the Flames in compensation while also receiving a fourth round selection back.[23]

And he was drafted in the 6th round.

I don’t like the human, but there was a pen flip from a scout over his 8th round selection, and then he became the franchise player.
Theo was straw into gold.

I think I'm going with MacInnis- not only due to his Calgary tenure but I feel you can make the case his career may well be as good as any including Hull, but I'm a huge MacInnis booster
|
User name doesn't track.
But I agree with you. MacInnis and Hull are probably the best Flames drafts picks at their position in terms of sheer stats over their career.
You can make a case for the Makarov/Fleury/Gaudreau picks as far as impact versus draft position I guess.

Part of the list of Flames stars who left because they wanted out and not because the Flames wanted it that way. Fleury, Newy, in the group.

That, sir, is to put it mildly.

Going with Nieuwendyk. Second round pick for a star player who was a big piece of three cups. I would have went with Hull, but Nieuwendyk was part of bringing a cup to Calgary and got us Iggy.

Lots of good picks to choose from. I picked Fleury just because I thought he was the biggest individual impact player

Yeah but how much of that is the Flames cheapness? Those players all got more money elsewhere. Flames only wanted these guys at a discount. Far cry from guys like Tkachuck and Gaudreau leaving when the Flames were willing to give top dollar.
In the case of Roberts, I can't fault him for wanting to be out East with how travel was going to impact him after his injuries.

I think best pick has to be a combination of the player he was and what he provided to the franchise. For me it was between MacInnis and Nieuwendyk. Wearing the Flames jersey it is a no brainer because winning the Conn Smythe and the Stanley cup is the pinnacle of a pick. Nieuwendyk is in the conversation because as an asset he was turned into another franchise player in Iginla. Close, but ended up going with MacInnis.
