Markstrom had one stand out season, and he sewered it by falling apart in our first Battle of Alberta in how long?
Markstrom was a bust as a Flame.
Dustin Wolf is currently rocking a .914, which would be Markstrom's 2nd best season by a large amount.
Markstrom did not deliver what he was paid to while he was here.
.904
.922
.892
.905
That's one top season, and three years that aren't even 'starter' quality.
Wolf > Markstrom

Markstrom had about 0 GSAE as a Flame and we had to eat salary to get him out. That’s an all quarter century player?

look, I get the bitterness and resentment towards Markstrom. Still, it's really hard to argue that Wolf or any other goalie not named Kiprusoff had a better overall body of work in a Flames uniform this century. That in itself is pretty sad, but it is what it is ... the Vezina finalist season alone is by far the best any goalie performed for the Flames in a long time (again, outside of Kipper).
Who else? Brian Elliott? Jonas Hiller? Karri Ramo? Roman Turek? Come on now.

That's more indicative of the goalies the Flames have had over the past 25 years but for this organization he's the second best goalie in that time frame and there is really no arguing it.
Wolf is great, and hopefully Wolf is "First team" for the 2025-2050 quarter century team. But for 2000-2025 it's Kipper and Markstrom.
And in terms of retaining salary they retained salary to get a 1st and Kevin Bahl back...so not like they just retained salary to move him as a cap dump.

What’s the difference? They’re all zero value goalies. Wolf at least seems to be as good as anyone else in the NHL today.

The goalie options would be:
Kipper: 576 GP - .913 - he's the lock for 1st team.
Markstrom: 213 GP - .907
Turek: 152 GP - .906
Rittich: 130 GP - .908
Ramo: 111 GP: - .911 (maybe a bit underrated, weird he didn't get another NHL look after 15-16)
Wolf: 37 GP - .906
Really not a lot of good choices. Markstrom returned us a 1st and Bahl, and did win a playoff series, so that's probably as good a choice as any.
Ramo probably the next best option and I'm trying to remember why the didn't re-sign him coming out of 15-16 when he was clearly the teams best goalie that season when they decided to do the 3 headed monster with Ramo, Ortio, and Hiller

yeah Ramos numbers are better than I thought. Extremely consistent too.
2.65 and .911 in 40
2.60 and .912 in 34
2.63 and .909 in 37
nothing spectacular, but it doesn't get more consistent than that.

Wolf has won 10 games faster than any goalie in franchise history. And its early. Just pointing this out NOT to disregard anyone but no one has talked about this

Lindholm is a tough one to fit since he played both center and right wing. You could argue him and Langkow were the two best centers, but over shorter terms than Monahan and Backlund. Probably fair to have him as the second team RW.
I'd probably go Hamilton and Phaneuf for the second team defence. But outside of that first team looks good.

To clarify: he won 10 home games to start a season faster than any goalie in franchise history.
As for fastest wins, I don't know 10 but I do know that Kipper won 20 in 31 games and Wolf is 2nd, winning 20 in 37 games.
And it really was incredible, and deserves discussion...
10-1-1 1.97 GAA, 0.937 save percentage.

home games. And yeah, that's awesome, as is winning 20 games in 37 starts (only Kipper was faster) ... I'm as pumped about Wolf as everybody else, but naming him 2nd best Flames goalie of the century (at this point!) is premature and insane, given the super small sample size.

We paid $3.5 million for that and it’s a protected pick. So what would that have been otherwise, Bahl and a 4th? For our all quarter century team? Imagine if Kiprusoff got hurt, Markstrom would be in there playing like he did in the Edmonton series.

The value of cap space has declined substantially.
My guess is that if there had been no retention, the deal would probably been a 1st and a lesser prospect. Or maybe Bahl and a 2nd

It counts 2000 so we could use Brathwaite or Giguere.

Giguere and his 22 games? Most of which were played in the late 90s? Honestly.

They don't actually play the games.
The idea that Markstrom has to go in and play against Edmonton, or that Monahan has to go line up against McDavid and MacKinnon has no bearing on the discussion.
It's between the years of 2000 - 2025 who were the best Calgary Flames?
Markstrom is very likely the second best goalie over that time period when you look at Games Played, Save Percentage, performance, etc.
Monahan and Backlund were the two best centers over that time period.
And that's why the team didn't have more success over the last 25 years...we were very thin at two critical positions of center and goalie.

Yeah, you’re right. Markstrom was just so much better than Karri Ramo or David Rittich.

I am not a huge Markstrom fan either, but we don't beat Dallas without him.
He wasn't good vs Edmonton but who was? That loss is firmly on the shoulders of Darryl Sutter and his refusal to make any changes.
