I’m worried about team toughness with Lucic gone
Like it or not he was a deterrent
Who is our deterrent now?
We definitely need one, so that we don’t have clowns like Nurse and E. Kane running around.
Surely, that guy isn’t Ritchie, at least I hope not.
For defensive depth perhaps we can sign Schenn to a cheap short deal
I’m just not sold on Gilbert as some.
Forwards, I feel we have enough to fill the roster from the farm system

He was on waivers in the past with no bites, you would assume that he was available for cheap all last season if a team wanted with no bites, so there is a good chance this wasn't a Calgary screwing him and a NHL teams/GMs aren't keen on handing the smallest guy in the NHL an automatic spot in the NHL.
Now this may have changed now he has another good AHL season and it may be that he is mad enough at the Flames that he just wants to leave even if it isn't for a better opportunity, but it is possible that with Sutter and Treliving gone, Calgary offers him as good as chance as anywhere else to try and make the team.
Not sure that is a great argument as I think he likely leaves, but a possible reason he would come back.

I sincerely hope we never spend more than $2M AAV on a UFA from another team again. So it's good to hear us abstaining from this years free agency as far as "major UFA signings" go, but also, this team is capped-out. So free agent signings were never on the table - but dang do I hope this signals a change in philosophy.
When I heard Dave Nonis talk about attracting free agents at the press conference where Conroy got announced, I wanted to rage. Good teams don't build through big free agent signings. Internal development, trades, and minor (sub-$2M AAV) free agents from here on out exclusively, please.

Schenn is not happening, if he were willing to take a short term deal. He would have already signed in Toronto (his first choice), apparently a bunch of other suitors out there for him as well

I think there is a time and place for free agent signings especially if you are close or on the cusp. But I agree this team is none of that right now so encouraging to hear that they won’t be making any significant transactions.

I mean, the Rangers are really good and they had a huge UFA signing in Panarin. It shouldn't be off the table, but it should be rare.

Huberdeau - Lindholm - Sharangovich
Pelletier - Kadri - Dube
Mangiapane - Backlund - Coleman
Ruzicka - B.Jones - Duehr
Weegar-Andersson
Hanifin?-Tanev
Kylington-Zadorov
Extra: Gilbert
Markstrom/Vladar
If either Lindholm or Backlund are traded I expect one of Dube/Sharangovich to center the 3rd line. If Hanifin is traded I expect Kylington to move up to play with Tanev. The Flames would sign Stretcher if they move Z. Wolf will be the backup if we move Vladar. I wouldn't mind seeing Phillips (if he's back) or Coronato in the lineup. I also like the idea of going after Sanheim and Duclair if we free up some cap space.

Compher would be a good signing, especially if Backlund is going. He's got some decent wheels, can also play 20+ minutes if need be. He had to when MacK was out.

I really don't know if he can get a one way deal. Maybe, it's just money and doesn't affect the cap.
But I definitely agree with the second half of this statement. Hard to imagine a team having more open forward spots available for younger players as it stands now than the Flames do. Assuming they don't participate in UFA signings, Phillips really only has to beat out other players with minimal NHL experience to make the team. Whether he actually does is a different story.

The UFA situation for New York and Calgary is not comparable.

Hill is re-signing with Vegas. And after seeing how he choked against the Oilers I would want nothing to do with Korpisalo.

Rare is fine - but closing out an avenue to improve your team is a terrible plan.
Vegas got their #1 d as a UFA for big bucks when he was turning 29/30.
The goalie who just won the Vezina trophy was a UFA signing.
Most of us wanted to sign Gaudreau, he wouldn't sign here - why does it become dumb for Columbus to sign him in that case.
Obviously you have to smart and not sign mid-tier guys to big/long contracts - but just ignoring an avenue to improve your team is not smart strategy.

Pius Suter for some depth. Should come cheap.
Keep Stetcher around unless someone else overpays him.
Could also consider bringing Hathaway back and take a look at Conor Sheary.
Only on short term deals, max two years.

I think Gilbert, Pelletier, Wolf, Coronato, Duehr, Ruzicka make the big club this year.
Really hope they find a way to bring back Stecher. The Kylington question mark is a big one.
I also think that other than Toffoli obviously we start the season with the other 3 that requested a trade. I think at least one of them will change their minds.

I personally only hope for some players who aren't qualified, but are decent young players. If not those, then 1 year deals on a couple of likely candidates to be in demand at the trade deadline for mid-round picks.
However, I am fine with the Flames staying out of the UFA bin completely this year. It would be nice to accumulate cap space this year, and try to weaponize it at the deadline, as cap room is going to be gold this season. That's my priority if I am Conroy. Flames may need all the cap space anyway just to be able to trade players - being able to retain on players AND receive extra cap in exchange might be the difference between having a good return and not being able to make the deal at all.

I'm hoping for Jonathan Drouin. Low risk high reward type guy if the price is right. Maybe he gets reinvigorated playing with Huby and Pelts.

I like the no big free agent signings plan, but let's not pretend like he has a choice here haha
Not a lot of cap space on the books.

we should throw the young guys into the fire and give them big minutes and experience and tank for a season or two and go for the draft lottery, use the system. Now that the oilers have mcdrei they totally forgot about all the bad seasons
lol kidding aside, seriously what happens if we lose Lindy and backs?
