Last year the keyword was checking - they were a relentless checking team (didn't matter if it was with the stick or body) that could score. I didn't hear any emphasis on the checking part of the game by coaches or players this year, what happened to that?

Being avg at best
-known for 60-80’ shots to bump our shot count total up
- anyone on opposing team has a slump, we’re here to help
- newbie goalies here to support you and make you look like a star
- 10-12 solid minutes each game, little more if we have to
- more then half dozen breakdowns and enjoy giving up lots of odd man rushes , we don’t discriminate from odd man to break ways
Oh man i could go on but i digress. I want a do over from last year

The Flames are one of the teams that get rolled over without so much as an introduction or meaningful impact on the story. They're league space filler.

They are kind of like a NPC (Non playable character)

2021-2022: 111 pts, Pacific Division Champions. Second best goal differential in the league, Best line in hockey (Tkachuk, Lindholm, Gaudreau), elite two way dominance.
Heading into the playoffs, they were the 3rd favorite to win the cup.
2018-2019: 107 pts, Western Coference Champions, 2nd overall. Breakout seasons for Gaudreau/Monahan/Tkachuk/Lindholm/Giordano.
Heading into the playoffs, they were the 2nd favorite to win the cup.
Having an elite, legitimate contender every three seasons is nothing to sneeze at. Strongly disagree with the idea of 'mediocrity' and 'sneaking into the playoffs.' Management has built a legit powerhouse two out of the last five years.

I feel like the Flames have not adjusted to the impact of changes in the NHL. IMO goalie equipment changes have made a bigger impact than the stats suggest, at least early on, The NHL made changes to what was considered a shot at the same time the reduced goalie equipment. The impact of this was league save percent didn't drop right away resulting a view the impact was insignificant.
Also, not sure but it feels like since teams started using the bump back pass on the PP, PP percentages have escalated quickly. This plus weaker goaltending we are seeing league averages of almost 22% on the PP.
The Flames are still building their team full of 200-foot hockey players. Guys that aren't high end offensive players but responsible at both ends of the ice.
Teams are winning with offense these days. No lead seems safe anymore, teams with lethal PP's are scoring a ridiculous rate.
This team needs to get way faster and way more talented.
