These things happen but oof not qualifying your #3 overall pick from 7 years ago is about as bad as it gets.
Lots of rightful attention on the fact that Marner went the very next pick but overall that was a good top half of the draft.
4: Marner
5: Hanifin
6: Zacha
7: Provorov
8: Werenski
9: Meier
10: Rantanen
Not all home runs but all contributing members of their teams.
That's a bad pick.

There is a lot more to it than just an 18.5% at Bedard.
It's supposed to be a deep draft, and there is also very high end prospects like Michkov, Fantilli and Benson at the top of that draft.
Plus, the Hawks already have two 2023 1sts in the fold, and by the time they are done at the 2023 deadline I'd expect at least one more.

Strome had a rough start to the 2021 season, because Colliton had no idea how to use the kid. But, King was able to salvage something from Strome.
Kubalik, a bit of a one note player, suffered along with linemate Toews struggles. 'Hawks should have sold high on him in 2020.
|
We can assume both were offered around the elague and no one would give up even a 7th round pick for them.
Neither is worth what they would have made on a QO this year, so I agree the Hawks were better to let them go.

5 of the 8 top Hawks' point producers from 2021-2022 are gone. The only 3 left? Kane, Toews and Seth Jones.

I get this, from the outside it doesn't look good because they only have a 1 in 5 chance of getting Bedard.
I think you have to look at it this way; with the team they have, it's a 1 in 1000 they make the playoffs. So what do you do? The goal is to win the cup and they wouldn't even make the playoffs so what do they do? Play for pride? How has that helped the Flames over the past 20 or so years? If there was a year to try, this is the year. Bedard looks to be a generational talent but there's lots of other good players that can help a team or be built around.
I give them credit for doing it....as long as they aren't trying to lose games. They're just putting together the worse possible team. Everyone gets excited when a team loads up for the playoffs to go for it. This is just the exact opposite. I wish the Flames would have done this a few times, if Johnny walks I wouldn't mind them doing it again (it wont' happen but if he walks, it should).

Strome was a coyotes pick until the Hawks traded Nick Schmaltz for him

1 in 5 for Bedard but there's really the big 3 of the 2023 Draft class - Michkov & Fantelli

Nick Schmaltz would have pretty high trade value right now, too ... Strome was just let go for free. Woof.

I saw on a hockey blogger's Facebook post. It said that he will ask for a trade at the start of the Free Agency period. It alleges that Kane is very upset with the moves the Blackhawks are making and wants out.
In my opinion this has been their plan. A couple years ago Toews and Kane said they want to remain in Chicago for life. Current management have decided the want to rebuild but Toews and Kane aren't happy with that and expressed their desires for the team to keep competitive. So the team is just forcing their hands. Want to stay here? Well, you're going to get to play with crap.

I saw the same post. Apparently there is a Chicago radio insider that leaked this rumour of a trade request.
Not sure how much substance there is to this rumour, but this will be a very interesting off-season, especially if it looks like Chicago is dismantling their team and going full tank for next year.

No reason to keep any player they don't think will be part of the team in a meaningful way in 5 years.
They'll spend money if they can to take cap dumps etc. to get prospects and draft picks.

With only 1 year left on their contracts, now is the perfect time to get rid of Kane and Toews. For Chicago they can retain salary and that cap retention only lasts for a year. They don't seem to need to worry about exceeding the cap this year. For the other teams they only have to worry about those players for 1 year. They can keep them if it works out and they have space or just move on.
