Oilers, nor anybody else know anything about Woodcroft's shelf life as a non-interim HC.

But sure, let's go and lock ourselves into 3 years.

I get the sense of a coaching version of the Koskinen signing.

The Ted Lasso of hockey

If there was any positive to the Oil making it as far as they did, at least they didn't feel the need to go after the top coaches on the market

Seems like he’s a decent coach as he has swagger but the sample size is small and he hasn’t had to coach under any adversity.

This feels like a very Edmonton thing to do.
He got good results over 1/2 a season plus playoffs, but I would have expected that to translate into a 1 year "prove it over a season" contract. He very well could be the real deal, but he could just as easily be tuned out by a team that seems to burn through coaches with 2 years.

I can't imagine there was a lot of competition for his services.

0 chance he sees those 3 years.
Not a big enough name for Lowe to say he has under his staff. And coaches, followed closely by the GM, get the blame from the team via the media up there pretty quick when things turn south. Next season has all the earmarks of that.

But, short term success gets its reward there. Like the time Lowe declined the option on McTavish for the next year before the end of the reg season, then MacTavish makes the finals and the Oilers paid 3x for his new contract.

Hopefully like 2006, Lowe also severely overpays role players like he did Pisani and Moreau after they had decent playoffs.

It wasn't a very long stint, so who knows if it'll last but it seemed like they improved their defensive play under him, so I'm not sure why this is a bad move.

To me it looked like they did the same as always but lucked into Kane and better goaltending.

I think it's the 3 year deal that is raising eyebrows. No Kane, Smith/Skinner in goal? IDK, time will tell.

They were tied in game six in an elimination round against the Kings. Fine line between being let go and a 3 year deal.

They improve their defensive play under every coach and then backslide. Tippett is a prime example. Woodcroft just was in place too late for it to happen. They played crap D in the POs and managed to outscore Calgary but not the Avs.

This cant be stated enough. "they are building something special up there". and as you know if you pay a player like a superstar, he will become that. Say hello to future Norris winner, Darnell Nurse

Lots of fair points. Does Woodcroft take a 1 year deal though? Or would the Oilers risk him feeling insulted and lose him to someone else? Maybe a 2 year offer then would've been better than 3.

3 years!! A lot less than the lifetime contract oilers fans were touting.

Literally no way he sees out 3 years. Hope that he got a nice exit clause.

Once again though...who are the Oilers negotiating against?

Their own players and media. If you give a coach a one-year contract, everyone knows he's a lame duck and they can go right to work on getting him fired.

Ducharme 2.0? Makes a small run in the playoffs by beating a banged up Kings team in a long series. Then he showed some moxie against the Flames, but let's be real here, the Flames beat themselves just as much as the Oilers won that series.

They made the playoffs in the weakest division in the league on the backs of two Hart Trophy winners. I don't see how he has proven anything at this point. I could see a scenario where he doesn't last the season.

Small sample size where he did get results. Gets a 3 year extension out of it. With so many top coaches available, looks like the Oilers believe in the guy.
