They could also move Debrusk retained and save more, or in a pinch buy him out. Cheaper than a Monahan buyout.
But anyway, assuming they sign their guys, they still need depth players and middle six guys don't make minimum. Move an overpaid 4C for a slightly overpaid 2-3W is a step forward.

What is Monahans role?
If you can somehow get rid of Monahan and get a half decent player out of it you do it.
I just don't see it happening.

This is a short sighted stance though. In my opinion it would be super easy to offload both this contract and Toffoli's contracts in the offseason if it came to it. If the contract is easy to offload, then what's the risk of taking it on for the post season? I'd argue the risk is, your acquisition price vs. your selling price.. but to me that could easily be argued as your rental price....

Flames should only be in the market for pure rentals.
They likely need to find a way to move Monahan and Lucic in order to retain Gaudreau, Tkachuk, Kylington, and Mangiapane.

I wonder if I'm the only one who doesn't want to get rid of Monahan.. I'd way rather get rid of Lucic..

If you manage to trade Monahan for Debrusk right now, and then buy Debrusk out in the off season, you end up with a 4 year cap hit of only $666,667 per year. That's almost as good as a rental. If you buy out Monahan you get 2 years of cap hit of $2.3 and 2M. That's a third line player.

Lucic is probably more tradeable in the offseason after his bonus. But yeah, Monahan's more valuable.

What’s the deal? Why does he want out? Bruins not usually a team players are running from.

He's been a healthy scratch this year.

Yeah, think he feels he has more to give and is being underutilized. Maybe somewhat comparable to the Sam Bennett situation. Although for DeBrusk, he's proven that he's capable for 27 goals. I can imagine it being super frustrating to have 27 goals in recent history as a young kid and then reduced minutes/scratches in following years.
Change of scenery seems right.

Reason: 27 goals, not 30

Thats exactly it.
I don't want to have to move Toffoli just to get out of the problem.
Its way easier to trade players on 1 year deals, which is both Monahan and Lucic, so taking our chances on that seems more wise to me.
