That should put the nail in the coffin of the Canucks playoff chances. They put together a good run post Boudreau hiring but ultimately the team has too many holes post Benning that couldn't be overcome. They have some good players but are a very flawed team, especially on the backend, with warts hidden by Demko.
They have two top 4 defensemen in Hughes and Ekman Larson and a lot of third pairing defensemen... A below average defense that they are spending a premium on. The fact that they traded away Hamonic for anything is a borderline miracle. And unless your team is a contender trading away draft picks, especially higher picks, isn't going to end well. Especially when the only goal seems to be making the playoffs and praying to win a round.
This idea of retooling only works when you have a great, generational set of original tools, not Mastercraft #### from the last time Canadian Tire had a sale. Every top team in the NHL has capitalized on top draft picks... Or in the case of the Rangers have a team fall into your lap.
