02/03 was his final season, tried to come back for 09/10.. did well in the preseason... would he have not helped? We missed the playoffs by only 5 points despite having the lowest goals scored in the west... Kipper was amazing that year.

Nah, adding a guy who just didn’t have it any more would probably cost them points, not add points.

I always thought Avery missed his calling and should've signed with WWE - he's a natural heel and people would pay to see him get the crap beat out of him.

Fleury was also 41.

Danny Lawson tried a comeback with the Oilers at 39 I recall, and course Mr. Hockey was 43.

Don't like him as a player much, but the comeback attempt is a fun idea. Claude Lemieux did this successfully with the Sharks at 42 years old. I wish Avery all the best, these kinds of stories are fun to follow.

Gordie never really quit playing though, except for those 2 years between NHL and WHA. He was 43 when he quit NHL and 45 when he started with Houston. And then played WHA until he came back with the Whalers at age 51. And scored .5 PPG.

Avery is not Fleury or Jagr or Chara or even Lemieux. Dude was a puke, but he was a hell of a hockey player too. Thats what made people hate him the most.

Avery was at very best kind of okay.

Fleury was a star, Avery was not.

Yeah the only thing Theo and Avery have in common is they are both idiots. As far as hockey skills go Avery was nowhere near Theo's level.

4 points in 4 preseason games, was in amazing shape apparently.. I dunno.. worth a shot on a minimum 2 way salary.. IMO. I mean would he have been worse than these 2:

Jamal Mayers† 27 1 5 6 2 53
Fredrik Sjostrom‡ 46 1 5 6 2 8

If I recall, in Theo's words, it was historic.

What is a "Solar Bear?" It's like they mashed two random words together for the team name.

It's a play on polar bear because the team is in Florida, so the polar bear mascot has sunglasses. They have some of the nicest jerseys and gear in the ECHL, or AHL for that matter.

Amazing shape? No. He was in terrible shape. And he would never have taken a 2 way deal.

He scored points in the easiest preseason games as well. Sutter made his call pretty easily.

Freddie S was a decent defensive player who had 6 seasons before that year and one after. Mayers was a 10 year vet, but in any event was in Toronto at the time. He came in the Phaneuf trade (and Freddie S went).

Opening day the roster had, IIRC, Iggy, Bourque, Glencross, Dawes, Nystrom, Boyd, Moss, Prust, McGrattan and Freddie on wing. Theo wasn’t better than any of those guys.

A couple other comeback attempts were Jim Peplinski, who came back after missing four seasons (only played six games... would love to know the story behind that one). He was 36 when he came back, though.

Another one was Kent Nilsson who also came back for six games in that same 1994-95 season except for Edmonton. He hadn't played in the NHL since 1986-87. He was 38, though, and did play a little bit in low level European leagues the last few seasons before that comeback.
