It's pretty crazy. The Flames had a couple of losing streaks, but even so, are pacing for a 110 point pace. Normally that's good enough for 2-5 in the standings.

There are some really lousy teams in the East though.

They are trending towards 7-8 spot.

But I think in the top 10 it’s almost splitting hairs. Anyone can beat anyone.

We’ve been smoked by the big 4 and have returned serve.

If we can snag 108 points, and home ice in the playoffs against most of the West (outside of Colorado) but still draft in the 12-15 spot because of the inflated points of the Eastern teams... sign me up.

There are some absolute point donors in the East...look at the Flames record vs. the East with the majority being road games

Pacific division win will give them the #2 seed in the west, rest is irrelevant

We are giving MTL the last pick in the first round though.

I wouldn't think that will be the final result, but it could be. The NHL Middle class of 90-99 point teams has shrunk. Only Edmonton, Los Angeles, Nashville, and Dallas are projecting to end up in that area this season. Typically this is a corhort where you find a lot more teams. In the 2019-2020 season there were 13 teams projecting to finish in this range.

The one place where the Flames play appears to have yield less efficient results vs the rest of the league does look to be in their point total. They're in the mix with Minnesota, and St.Louis in the Conference when some other numbers suggest they should be closer to Colorado, Florida, Carolina, and Tampa Bay.
10 straight should've put them further ahead than they are.

In any other year if a 14th ranked team wins 10 straight it puts them up in the top 5 easily.

Flames, incredibly, still just in the 6-8th range.

Middle name like Ron Howard's kids, sure, but first name? That's stupid.

which amazes me even more when I look at the standings. They are on a pace for 110 points, and still, there's 8 teams with a better pace. I get that there's a number of really bad teams in the East which will skew the picture a little bit, but there's also teams like Minnesota which are doing incredibly well this year. I can't remember the disparity between good and bad teams ever being that huge in the cap era, it just feels crazy this year.
So how would you rank the top 5 teams this year? Or ar least who would you categorize as top 5 in no order?

I would have them:

Panthers
Lightning
Avalanche
Hurricanes
Flames

I think Toronto is notably soft and Campbell appears to be losing a step. I don't think the Caps or Bruins are as good as their point totals having watched a few of their games. Crosby and Malkin are getting up there in age, and they have been ousted early in recent times. And Vegas is still a question mark, so far don't look as dominant as their past teams. The Flames look more like Vegas than the knights do this year.

I'd be very nervous about facing any of those top four.

I think the Flames would fare well head to head against most other teams. St Louis is scary when they're on, but they've also had an inconsistent year.

I saw a TSN stat that showed this was the 4th fastest flames team to 30 wins and we all remember the other 3.
88/89 - speaks for itself 47 games

18/19 - not a distant memory. The team absolutely dominated for a couple of months and was good enough to win enough games down the stretch but their 110pt pacing top line cooled significantly and their inexperienced coach was unable to have them ready for the playoffs. This was also 47 games

21/22 - we are living it 49 games

08/09 - this was the best team Darryl Sutter built as GM. Moved on from Tanguay and Husselius and added Cammaleri, Bertuzzi, Bourque, and Glencross. They were a truly elite team getting a 13pt division lead. They went all in at the deadline and got Jokinen and brought back Leopold. Injuries hit hard and this team backed into the playoffs big time. They won their 30th game in 49 games

Let's be more like '89 and less like '09 and '19.

Wait why did they all happen in the 9th year lol.

While it wasn’t the same circumstances the 09 and 19 teams are very similar in how they broke our heart. December and January they were unbeatable with brand new wingers enjoying breakout years in Cammy and Lindy respectively.

Both teams faced young up and coming teams however the Hawks were the higher seed than the Flames in 09 the Avs were red hot down the stretch in 19.

I feel like this year is different. Certainly feels like a different vibe this time around

Many most of the Flames losses this year are games they really should have won... especially those early home losses.

Remember that first period against Nashville? Should have been a blowout win.
