Bettman should be gone just on the context of trying to force a hockey market to exist in Arizona when a perfectly good arena and fan base get blackballed in QC.

Yes, his obsession with having NHL hockey in a desert state is weird. And expensive.

The problem is that after how many years, people still haven't figured out that Gary Bettman is a lawyer, not a PR person. They keep asking him questions and getting upset when they get lawyer answers vs PR answers.

It's crazy. People don't want to talk to PR people, because they want "the real truth" but they also seem to never like "the real truth" when a non-PR person says it.

Sure, but the quote never needed to be made if that's the context. Just a dumb and dismissive answer.

Bettman should have been punted to the sun when he gave the national contract to a 3rd tier amateur sports network like Sportsnet.

Set back the NHL a decade with that idiotic move.

Please. I would think most of us would know by that the league wants a team in Arizona for the US TV market share.

Sure seems time for Gary to get a new PR manager. The answers are not valid in todays cancel culture society.

Still seems like an old boys club thinking.

That desert is the 11th largest tv market in the US. Considering he couldn't make it work in the 7th largest, and he wants the 8th largest to pay $600 million to join, and he just got a US tv deal based on the NHL "footprint", I'd say his justification for staying in Arizona is warranted.

(screwing QC is just a side bonus.)

The national contract is with ESPN. Sportsnet has the national contract's hat.

Anyway, there's not much the NHL can do about TV rights in Canada, except hold their noses and take the highest bid. There are only two companies in the bidding, and their secret names are Tweedledum and Tweedledumber.

Even if nobody watches it and the team bleeds money like crazy? Ya, that makes sense.

Quit applying proper context. People really want to hang everything on Bettman and you're not helping in today's case.

Good for LeBrun!

Unfortunately, Gary answers to 32 people and they care about one thing: money. As long as this doesn't cost them too much, they will say, and do, absolutely nothing. As will Gary. He's stemmed the tide for now and he's put Fehr on the defensive. That all looks like cash in the bank to Gary and the owners.

Until the populace at large complains or stays away with their wallets (that's us here, too, folks) absolutely nothing more will be done or change other than virtue signalling.

Bettman should be gone.
Everyone at the Blackhawks should be gone. All their players from 2010 should be gone.
All their AHL affiliate players, coaches and management should be gone.
Anyone who has played with Beach since in any league should be gone.

Am I doing this right?

Yeah limiting franchise movement helped the league secure over $1 billion in expansion fees. Hard to argue with that.

Yes that's precisely what we're discussing here. It's a pretty slippery slope. Next think you know, the stadiums will be demolished.

...And then libraries built on the land instead. Can you just imagine?? ugh

It doesn't matter if no one watches (that's the broadcasters problem). All that matter is that he can say the NHL is in 18 of the top 20 US markets. Without PHX that deal may have been less.

It doesn't matter if the team bleeds money (that's the owners problem). I am sure there is a limit on the NHL assistance program. The NHL isn't on the hook for Coyotes' loses.

What benefit is there to the NHL of having a team in QC? It doesn't improve their US TV footprint. If anything QC would be the same drag as the Coyotes.

QC is so far down the list it isn't funny. The goal is to get Houston and Kansas City to pay $600 mil each for a franchise in 2028. Then Cleveland or Cincinnati, Then Portland and/or Baltimore. Then maybe look at QC.

There are few voices that I respect more than Eric D. He penned a good piece on this:
