Cap friendly says they made a mistake. Contract is 1 way with $150k signing bonus in year 1 and $175k in year 2.

Organization giving him a 1 way deals signals they want him up with the club.

Also as Puckpedia has pointed out, because of the signing bonuses, the QO for Mackey will be $787.5k when this contract expires.

Kylington with the two way deal. Mackey with the one.

Given how long it took to get the deal done, the 1 way deal is likely a compromise by the Flames and the second year is a compromise by the player.

It will be interesting how it plays out.

Kylington has a lower cap hit and needs to clear waivers to be sent down, but he's on a two-way deal, so he costs less if he is sent down. Mackey doesn't need waivers and has the higher cap hit, but the one-way deal means he'll cost the same either way.

I like this player and I hope to see him get some playing time to prove he belongs. He's not that young so we don't really have the luxury of grooming him slowly.

Our D corps has depth but really lacks high end talent. Not sure how they will be able to address that any time soon. In the meantime, they'll need a corps of stable guys that work well together and fill roles as needed.

If Mackey can turn into a solid 3rd pairing guy that would be huge, going to need 3 pairings we can count on this season

Competition into camp is a good thing. Last year the Flames had almost no competition in camp and the results were awful.

Mackey was one of those US FA guys free to sign anywhere, right? Which other teams were looking to sign him prior to him choosing the Flames?

Virtually all of them.

This is the smartest signing of the summer. Now play the kid and lock him up long term in 2 years if he's proving his worth.
