Backlund has tenure, and he is one guy that gets assigned the not-so-glamorous roles, with a rotating cast of linemates, and even gets moved to a different position, yet he never complains. Selfless in the community too. I would pick him.

However, maybe the larger issue is that I don't really see a bunch of candidates on this team. Maybe that's the issue in and of itself?

The real truth is that we don't really know who the strong leaders probably are on the team.

That's a huge commitment! Do you think that last season was mostly an off year? Was it because of the lack of fans in the stands? I have a very hard time committing $9M and the captaincy to Tkachuk this off-season without seeing him have a career year(or close to it) next season.

You may be correct sir, in that case I would sign him.

He's also 36 years old and scored 5 goals and 17 points in 48 games this past season. I think Father Time has already acquired his rights.

Milan Lucic for a year or two then one of the younger players will be ready.

Lucic with a succession plan in place for Tkachuk.

Tell Tkachuk and Gaudreau whoever signs a reasonable extension first gets it.

Sutter. He can wear skates behind the bench and jump the boards to go after refs.

Yeah I'm not interested in Getzlaf myself. Maybe if he signs a Thornton type contract while trying to chase another Cup as a depth player, but if he's doing that he's probably not picking the Flames.

You know what I take it back. We have Lucic anyways.

I always had it in my head for some reason that some day he would end up traded to Calgary after the successful stint he had here as a Hitman. Would have made for a great story.

Did Lindholm have a 'A' this past season?

He would be my #1 long term choice for captain after Gio.

The fact that there still seems to be an asking price for Gio and I believe they are negotiating. I’m still 50/50 they work out a deal.

Otherwise I’m guessing no immediate new C.

Yeah I don’t see a ‘C’ happening for one season. If I was forced to pick one it would be Lucic.

I hope they just let Gio go. When you consider the cap space plus giving up an asset, it’s just not worth it IMO.

For how long he's been here, and he wears an A, it should be Backlund.
