Hopefully this sets a precedent and we don't see this in Canada.

The company my husband works for has been using biometric scanning since he began working for them and that's almost 12 years now. Company was bought out a few months ago & the new owners are still using a biometric scanner, they just switched to a different one. It's not a facial scan though, just a single finger scan. It seems to have worked well for them, far less fraud, and so far, I've not heard of anyone taking issue with it enough to raise much of a ruckus about it, though I know there are a few that don't like it.
