Now that the second line of Mangiapane-Ryan-Bennett is back together, I'm glad that the Flames have stopped trying to disguise the fact that they have been treating Tkachuk like a third line plug all season.

Hopefully the Flames can score more goals then the Panthers while at the same time allowing less goals then the opposition. This will result in a Flames win and a big 2 points.
However if the Flames somehow let in more goals and the Panthers score more, the Flames will undoubtedly lose.

I honestly don't get why Peters refuses to try Lindholm as 2C, at least on the road. It's really an indication of how much Bennett's stalled development has negatively effected this team. We are a top 6 forward short, and a 4th OA pick should really be able to develop into at least a 2nd line forward. Theoretically he should be a fit on the top line as he can forecheck/battle well (like Ferland did) and has experience at faceoffs to spell off Monahan if he's waived out (like Lindholm does); he just unfortunately hasn't done enough to warrant an extended look in the eyes of two separate coaching staffs.

Agreed about Bennett. I like Bennett for what he is, but I think his lack of development has hurt us, as I think they were waiting for him to breakout for 3 seasons, and didn't make other moves as a result.

FYI- Some good news for the Flames:
The Panthers are somewhat banged up early on in the season. Both Trocheck and Ekblad missed their last game and are questionable. Matheson is injured. Also Barkov has been playing (and still is) injured, with an upper body injury (maybe ribs/core)- he can't really take faceoffs, shoot the puck or take a hit.
Edit: Seems like Trocheck will miss another game but Ekblad is back in the lineup.

RE Barkov: if it were a do or die game he could. He's probably faking it, put your feet up son!
Am I doing it right?
The Flames need to start playing with a little more urgency to their game. It seems like they're just going through the motions most of the time. Hopefully they get on a roll soon.

Whatever line-up changes Peters claims he's making for this game, we all know he will revert back to the old standard within 20mins at absolute most... It's just how he operates.

I haven’t bothered watching much this season, but it sounds like the Flames are creeping back into Glen Gilutzan hockey habits. Probably for the best I keep the TV off if that’s true.

As soon as Bennett gets bumped up he gets to far into his own head instead of just playing hockey! Come on Sam! It’s not rocket science!

I’d love to see:
Mangiapane - Monahan - Tkachuk
Gaudreau - Bennett/Lindholm - Lindholm/Bennett
Frolik - Backlund - Czarnik
Lucic - Ryan - Rieder
Give the “2nd line” offensive zone starts all night.

It’s absolutely what has been happening, but it’s how last season started as well. Glen Gulutzan hockey to me is just settling for perimeter play and taking low quality shots, which is something that has been happening but I think it’s mostly due to a lack of execution (poor passing, poor reads). It should improve from here so long as the efforts and focus on execution improve.

Hard to blame him when he usually gets a period at most before Frolik's right back in that spot. He knows he's got maybe 5-6 shifts to score or else he'll be back on the 3rd line, easy to see why he's trying to toe-drag 1v3.

I don't get why Peters isn't doing the Bowman things this year like he did last.
Midway through the game you drop the three players not going, and play the hell out of the nine that are.

So here's my brief analysis of the Panthers a few games into the season.
This is a team that can score. They are 9th in the league early on with 3.22 GF/G, and that's without Barkov scoring a single goal yet (although he does have 8 assists). They have 3 legitimate lines that can score, as Connolly has come as advertised, and Malgin has taken a step forward.
The defense is a work in progress still as they rank 8th worst in GA/G. This is not an indictment on Bobrovsky who has been mostly very good (had one bad game to my memory) and has regularly made 10 bell saves most nights. This is a team defense issue, as it was last year. Some signs of progress are there, but the Panthers still give up a lot of high quality chances most nights, and I wonder if it will ever improve with the current personnel.
Coach Q has them working consistently hard every night, so they should not be taken lightly. However, his defensive strategies have not been consistently implemented and thus, the Panthers continue to be a middle of the pack team. If he gets any progress on that aspect this year, they should be a solid playoff team.
Basically, the Flames need to be ready to defend and counterattack. That's the way to beat the Panthers as they often make higher risk plays than necessary. Bobrovsky will bail them out quite a few times in a night, but at some point he will get beat.
