Is that for sure? I’m mildly surprised by this.

Probably a good gesture to the player

He had to be placed on waivers by 10AM this morning to be bought out now IIRC.

Oh, for sure Darling cashed in. I was thinking about the quality of his play, which has been terrible.

Surprised at the Sekera buyout, as pathetic as it is he's probably their 3rd or 4th best dman. They must be using Costanza logic at this point.

So Sekera saves the Oilers $3M, this year and next. Holland knows he can't get a comparable Dman in free agency to replace him for $3M (not even close), so the intention has to be that they will replace him internally with one of the many future Giordanos that they have.
The implication from that would be that they want to spend the money on a winger (which makes sense because they currently don't have a single one of them).

Im thinking that Johanssen is Hollands target in free agency...someone who has a defensive conscience and can keep up with Mcbroken.
Still not sure how they can afford him however.

Who but for the most desperate or mercenary, would voluntarily sign with the Oilers?
It'll have to be an over-pay.

I think for a lot of guys, the idea of playing with McDavid is a pretty enticing proposition. Even if the club doesnt see a whole lot of success, your own numbers can balloon for a bigger pay day in 2 or 3 years.

But the players you describe here are precisely not the players the Oilers need to fill out the cratered landscape of their roster. The only players who sign one- or two-year deals are journeymen and reclamation projects.

Not sure what took so long. Figured they’d buy him out to make extra room. This actually kind of sucks though since they have a considerable amount of space now to land a player or 2.

Holland is looking promising early on.
Sekera playing hockey is more valuable than the 3 million you opened up. And with a blueline like that...

Man i hope this is so the oilers blow their cap further by signing Gardiner long term.
Or, they decide they have enough solid d kids in the system ans use the cap on forwards. The kids might be good someday, but it could be 3 to 4 years before they are able to drive a top or 2nd pairing.

....and pretty much guarantees Top 5 Draft Picks.
Look at their defence with him....its atrocious....now look at it without him...
Holland better be expecting to pull some rabbits out of hats.

Staples is a delusional moron who sources his opinion by smelling his own farts.
They’re anticipating a big jump in the cap with a new US TV deal... so we’ll see.

They have 11 million to sign at least 5 players, whether their own RFAs or others.

Sekera is worth a one year $1M show me contract. If the Flames didn't have Stone I'd consider that if I weer Tre.
Schlemko is still probably good enough for a one way deal somewhere. Hell, if Lazar can get one....
