Who knows? Maybe Bjugstad? Maybe a defenseman. But there was no reason to lose as much as they lost. It was a terrible decision.

Does this make Florida more or less attractive to Panarin?

So in other words he's a perfect fit for the Oilers.

Yeah I figured that would probably be a positive, just couldn't remember what their relationship was like in Chicago.

Panthers fire coach Bob Boughner, hope to introduce Joel Quenneville as replacement on Monday
Head coach fired after underachieving season, but Florida is aiming to bring in three-time Cup winner with Chicago.

I believe word at the time was they didn't want to lose Petrovic or Pysyk.
Neither has proven to be as impactful as the guys they lost, and they already moved on from Petrovic.

Petrovic isn’t even playing at an NHL level right now
The Vegas trade catastrophe came from the owner ordering harsh pay roll cuts though. Tallon did a bad job with it but it was the result of an internally imposed cap from a meddling owner who had completely screwed the pooch with his decisions the year prior.

Long-time Islanders coach Jack Capuano is an assistant in Florida, which IMO adds weight to the Snow rumours -- Snow was very loyal to his coach and I believe they lived in the same house for a while (this was rumoured years ago and I don't know if it's true but I remember it being a running joke).

Yeah, that's part of it, but it falls on Tallon to be creative with his proposed solutions, not to trade away a 30 goal scorer and a strong 2-way forward.
The Panthers could have included a B-level prospect or a 3rd-round or later draft pick to send Smith to Vegas as a cap dump. Including Marchesseault was dumb.
Like Garth Snow level of dumb.
*Seriously....Garth Snow??? Is there nobody more suitable???

From what I remember, he actually became a decent GM by the end of his tenure with the Islanders, especially after Wang stepped back in the last couple of years.
Or, he just might have looked like a genius because he was trading with Chiarelli so much.

Possibly.
A quick glance at his trade history (and I may have missed one or two) show the Reinhart trade as a clear winner, and the rest meh.
Even the Eberle trade - Eberle didn't even hit 60 points last year and had a sub-par year this year too. In fact Strome, once he he got out of the steaming mess of Edmonton, was just about as productive as Eberle this year.
