If anything I'm even more pissed at Gulutzan for pissing away a couple years of Gio's talent by stifling him.

Giordano for me.

Every time the Flames needed a big goal or a big play it always comes from the Captain. What an incredible year for him.

I give the nod to Giordano. He's had such an exceptional season. When people look back at his career this season is going to stand out in a huge way. Gaudresu is too prone to slumps. We can blame his line mates to an extent but his production has fallen hard in the past 25 games. As he struggled Giordano has still helped the Flames win more than they lose.

It is Gaudreau for me. Gio is having a fantastic season and should win the Norris. That being said if he were to go down for a significant time the Flames have such significant D depth I think they would be ok. If Gaudreau goes down for a significant amount of time I think the impact would be much worse. Either one has a solid case imo and it is close, people saying it is not close or it is one or the other by a significant margin are out to lunch.

I'm glad everyone enjoyed the debate. With Gaudreau's Hart buzz, I was curious how their numbers stacked up and while Gaudreau scored more in key situations, the gap wasn't all that big.

Gio all the way. He is easily the most important player on this team, and it's not even close.

If someone was to note that Gaudreau and the top line have been flat for 2 months now, would you happen to agree?

Outside of that 6 point night, Johnny has 15 points in the other 26 games

I think if the Hart were awarded without a bias towards forwards, the four players who have most dominated the league this year would be:

Ben Bishop
Nikita Kucherov
Sidney Crosby
Mark Giordano

Don't get me wrong, this team needs Gaudreau. But relative to the league he hasn't been on the same level as the above group. He's in the second tier with guys like McDavid, MacKinnon, Burns, Marchand, and Kane. Crucial, but just missing the M in MVP.

If I had to choose one, I would choose Gio, but IMO, it's the combination of the 2 of them. They bring different things, and together, they are the MVPs of a great team.
I actually think Giordano drives a lot of the attack when he's on the ice. Yes, Gaudreau is an important focus for the offense, but he's not the only guy who can create. Tkachuk, Lindholm, Backlund, and Ryan can all create offensive opportunities for others on a regular basis. Monahan is no slouch, but not the primary driver on his line.

But Giordano is a dangerous offensive player in all situations this year. He has 4 short handed goals.....as a defenseman who's our primary penalty killer.....let that sink in for a second. The guy creates offense at every opportunity this year, and his tenacious attack has led to 73 point season to date.

That's not even getting into the defensive side of the game which Gio dominates as well. I know you're saying it's Gio yourself, but I don't think it's all that close.

I'll put it another way. Mark Giordano is likely going to win the Norris trophy this year. I doubt Gaudreau gets into the top 3 for the Hart trophy voting. I think it's obvious that Gio is the team's MVP this year, and I'm saying that as a huge Gaudreau fan.

Giordano. 35 and putting up his best season ever? Has to be the Captain. This is the year he gets all that should rightfully come to him. He is the rock they built this foundation on.

Gaudreau has had a hell of a year too, but not as consistent IMO.

Then right after, Elias Lindholm. Total everyman for this team this year. will end up with 80 points is all plays itself out right, PK leader, PP , for most of the season probably the most dogged on pucks in any zone. Revelation.

Well actually it has been about a month but that really has nothing to do with it. That is like me saying that the first 4 months the first line carried the team to where they are. My point was if Gio goes down while it hurts there are still guys like Kylington and Valimaki who are very capable young puck moving D men who can fill in. If Gaudreau goes down you have Tkachuk on the left side and that is it. Gaudreau also made Elias Lindholm into a 70+ point player because he is that dynamic. This team would absolutely be boned if Gaudreau went down for a significant amount of time.

This is hilarious. Seriously, Bishop has been good but come on man. He won't even be a Vezina nominee.
