If he is healthy, and doesn't get moved until the end of his contract he will have played over 100 games with the Flames. Just incredible.

I agree generally on the basis for your list, but I don't weight the cup as heavily, so I'd go:
[*]Iginla - clearly the best Flame of all time IMO
[*]Kiprusoff - IMO, even more than Iggy, was responible for team success in the 2000s
[*]Fleury - face of the franchise between the Cup and Iggy. I think he wins all kinds of personal awards absent his personal demons[*]Nieuwendyk - won a cup, hugely underrated talent
[*]Giordano - maybe the best team guy and his backgrounds makes him even more special
[*]McDonald - I have to admit I'm an outlier when it comes to Lanny - I was never a huge fan like others
[*]Vernon - his personality gets in the way of me liking him more
[*]Regher - another underrated guy. I think he ranks among the best pure defensive defencemen ever
[*]Nilsson - he, Fleury and Gaudreau may be the most gifted guys in Flame history
[*]Gaudreau - I think he was the one who sort of brought the Flames back into NHL attention. I can't recall a rookie, including Iginla and Newy, making a bigger public impact (Fleury might have if he hadn't been a late season addition).

He's the 2nd best defensman to lace em up for the Flames. May I remind everyone that MacInnis is still the all time assists leader.

He ranks somewhere in the top 10 of all time Flames.

He's right behind Iginla and exemplifies everything I value in a Calgary Flame.

He epitomizes this organization and is right up there with Iggy in terms of someone that we should be proud of to wear the Flaming C

And he did all that despite not being drafted.
When he turned down that contract and went to the KHL I knew this was a guy I was going to like for a long time.

Just with what he does in the community he should be top 3. He won the 2017 Muhammad Ali Sports Humanitarian Award from ESPN. The network that doesn't give a flying flip about hockey. That is MASSIVE!! Love this guy.

I love Gio and how he represents the club. If his career ended tomorrow (which would be tragic) I'm not sure where I'd have him in all time Flames. Certainly top 5 in defensemen, along with Chopper, Reinhart, Regehr and Suter. Gio's playoff record works against him and fact that that his best finish in Norris voting was 6th.

Now assuming the year finishes out the way it should and his career finishes out the way it should, I could see him going down as the greatest Flames defender of all time, or at worst #2.

I really hope he's a player who finishes his career playing for only one club.

Put his sweater in the rafters? He hasn't done enough yet IMO but I expect he gets there.

Would rank him #2 defence behind Chopper. As for overall that is tougher. Fleury is my clear cut #1 followed by Iggy and then Chopper. After that it is tough.

I'd put him 3rd, behind Schlemko in 2nd. The impact Shlemmy had, whoosh, that was insane. That shootout goal?! Don't recall us ever being as excited by a defenceman as in that moment.

;-)

By 2021, once the current core has had 3 more playoffs:

Iginla
Gio
MacInnis
Gaudreau
Mcdonald
Fleury
Nieuwendyk
Kipper
Vernon
Suter
Nilsson
Monahan
Roberts
...

Some players it's hard to rank if they weren't here a huge amount of time, but had a big impact - like Gilmour or Mullen.

Kipper gotta be higher, in my opinion. Think he gets overlooked because he was an insanely quiet guy, and then disappeared without a trace after he retired. (I actually saw him when I lived in Helsinki last year).
The man carried the team on his back for a decade. The best 'tender to play for the Flames, and one of the best ever to play the game.

Fair enough. Yeah, he could be considered top 3-5 no problem.

The question is that if Giordano is jersey retirement worthy?

Based on tenure - Yes
Based on overall performance and contribution to the team's on-ice success - Maybe

While I agree with your point, would you consider retiring Backlund's jersey as well? I believe he's only 1 less than Gio for years played with the Flames, and supposing he doesn't get traded or leave for free agency, could well be close to the amount of years Gio will end up playing with the Flames.

And while I think about it, by that stretch, Kipper?

(just playing Devil's advocate! If I had my way, Kipper's jersey would be retired, as would Gio's when he reaches the end of his career)

He can easily move ahead of a few of those guys based on how this season ends.
I don't think he should be behind Vernon and I have never considered Nilsson an all time Flame.

Sure, Nilsson scored a ton of points, but he never displayed that drive or heart to endear him to Flames fans, at least not me. I guess to me he never wore the Flames on his sleeve.

I would say Giordano is second best Flame defenseman, behind Al MacInnis, and ahead of Gary Suter for sure.

But I have always held Brad McCrimmon in high favor, even though he was not a Flame for a long time. Not many showed more heart and drive during the run to the Stanley Cup than McCrimmon...he was a warrior.

I'd say anywhere from 7-10 right now. I think these are our top 6, regardless of the order I put them in;

Iggy
Fleury
McDonald
MacInnis
Kipper
Vernon

If we win the cup with him, I think that pushes him onto this list and takes off Vernon or Kipper. Even winning the Norris at 35 may get him a spot above one of them in my books

I imagine the problem with McCrimmon (and again, I never watched him play) was that he only played three seasons here.
