If you are concerned for the safety or wellbeing of a child in Alberta, please contact the Northern Alberta Child Intervention Services or Southern Alberta Child Intervention Services at 1-800-638-0715.

This is horribly sad.
Brown bagging for kids is a great charity, they address an often overlooked problem. Our kid's school also carry a cache of food (KD, tuna and crackers, etc), whenever we can/remember we send a bag of these to the school.
We also advise our oldest whose school has a concession stand to carry extra cash in case a friend or classmate has forgotten their lunch.

I think this happens more than we may know. My 7 year old goes to school in a standard upper middle neighborhood. It didn't ever cross my mind that it could be a thing. But one night, i asked why she was stuffing 3 go-go pouches and a fist full of pepperoni sticks into her lunch box, she told me her friend never gets snacks and sometimes no lunch. My kid was scared she'd be in trouble because I apparently gave her a speech last year about not sharing food due to allergies and parents will give their kids what they should eat. So now I've just been buying costco quantities of food and telling her to pack her own snack as she pleases.

A growling stomach while trying to learn sucks. Zero f's given about "treating the symptoms" and not the cause.

I go to poor, remote, fly in reserves for court. It's hard to eat your lunch while kids stare at you, and you know a good percentage are extremely hungry. I always try to give at least half of my food away and have never ever had anyone refuse an offer in 10 years.

There are lots of kids in this country who are very hungry. It's very sad. The grinding poverty I see on a daily basis is terrible and hard to believe it exists in Canada.

Kudos to the original poster for trying to do something.

The sad thing is that there are a lot of people that are out of work, out of benefits and on the verge of losing everything and the kids are going to suffer because of it.

I hear daily since I started my job from some friends that are desperate for help, from can you help me find work, to can you loan me money.

Most of the time I say no because my job involves specific job searches, pretty much in the US and American's are going to hire Americans first, on the money side, I find it tough to turn people down, but on the other side, it feels more then likely that I'm not going to get paid back for a long time if ever.

This whole situation sucks, and hearing about hungry kids is freaking heart breaking.
