I know this is just a fun exercise but there will be so many changes to circumstances with the roster between now and then, projecting anything out that far is pure folly.
Though I can see this leading to some heated debates about the value of certain players.

I could definitely see a world where Brodie in particular is traded, perhaps as early as this summer for a legit number one goalie. The Flames just appear to be so deep on the backend that they may be in a position in the summer to move him for a permanent solution in net.
It is a long ways off though, but all things being equal I could see them going 4 and 4 as well, given the signifcant drop off after the two 4 forwards. They could just decide that losing one of the bottom 8 forwards is better than cutting a deal to protect the 4th best dman.
Protect Valimaki, Hanifin, Anderson and Hamonic. Possibly expose a soon to be 38 year old Giordano and a bunch of forwards. You either lose Gio or one of the forwards but you keep your young defensive nucleus in tact.

I remember Friedman saying that was the big lesson learned speaking to the GMs. Hindsight everyone would rather of just take their chances and just give up one asset vs multiple assets and draft picks. Seattle will not be able to clean up like Vegas did.

Love him but a 37 year old Gio should not be protected over a kylington or Andersson

I think it is more about their NMCs which require they are protected.

Still think there'll be some teams willing to pay some assets to keep players they cannot protect. Not at the volume Vegas took in but a decent enough amount.

No one currently on the Flames has a NMC.
Treliving has not yet signed a contract that has a NMC. The last Flame with a NMC was Wideman.

We just have to sign a Seattle native and they will be the sentimental guy to pick, a la Deryk Engelland and Vegas.
TJ Oshie should be pretty cheap to acquire come 2021/22

GMs will have learned from Vegas. They won't be as keen to make deals. Better off losing a guy because it's going to inevitably happen unless you somehow only got picks and brand new prospects back.

Nope (pending any future contract signings, but I don't see it being an issue).
Right now, there are 34 players league-wide who have contracts that will require protection for the expansion draft (unless the player waives it): - Oliver Ekman-Larsson - ARI
- Patrice Bergeron - BOS
- Brad Marchand - BOS
- Jordan Staal - CAR
- Patrick Kane - CHI
- Duncan Keith - CHI
- Brent Seabrook - CHI
- Jonathan Toews - CHI
- Erik Johnson - COL
- Jamie Benn - DAL
- Ben Bishop - DAL
- Alexander Radulov - DAL
- Tyler Seguin - DAL
- Frans Nielsen - DET
- Milan Lucic - EDM
- Jonathan Huberdeau - FLA
- Keith Yandle - FLA
- Drew Doughty - LAK
- Zach Parise - MIN
- Ryan Suter - MIN
- Carey Price - MTL
- Mika Zibanejad - NYR
- Bobby Ryan - OTT
- Claude Giroux - PHI
- Sidney Crosby - PIT
- Phil Kessel - PIT
- Kris Letang - PIT
- Evgeni Malkin - PIT
- Marc-Édouard Vlasic - SJS
- Victor Hedman - TBL
- Nikita Kucherov - TBL
- Steven Stamkos - TBL
- John Tavares - TOR
- Blake Wheeler - WPG
As bad as it is that the Oilers will be required to protect Lucic, if expansion had happened in 2020, they would have had to protect Russell too.

^ there will be lots of buyouts in June of 2021. One of them I guarantee will be Lucic (If not before that).

All this talk about Edmonton having to protect Lucic is pointless really. Here is my 'protection list' for Edmonton when it comes to forwards.
McDavid
Draisaitl
RNH
Lucic
Puljujarvi (might be reaching here, but whatever)
Yamamoto (see above).
What would be funny is if the Oilers actually develop another forward or two, and/or manage to attract another good forward or two. Whatever the situation, Chiasson is their fourth best forward right now. I don't think Lucic is going to impact their protection list much, as the Oilers can't seem to develop nor attract any talent outside of a top 3 pick.

No idea who the goalies will be
I could see Janko interchangeable with Dube/Mangiapane and Kylington could be interchangeable with Andersson.
I hate to say it but this draft could be a good way to get out of one of the Gio/Backlund deals. If the draft was this year they’d be protected but in three years I’m not so sure they will be, nor am I sure they should be.

Here: https://www.hockey-reference.com/box...ll_CGY_skaters is the roster we iced December 6th, 2014... the same distance in time from the 2017 expansion draft. Take a look at that roster (and the interesting fact we had an identical 17-9-2 record at the time!) and pick who you'd imagine we'd protect in 2017
Then here: https://globalnews.ca/news/3537479/c...pansion-draft/
Is our list of protected players in 2017. Some key differences (Dougie Hamilton anyone?)
Mikael Backlund, Sam Bennett, Micheal Ferland, Michael Frolik, Johnny Gaudreau, Curtis Lazar, Sean Monahan, T.J. Brodie, Mark Giordano, Dougie Hamilton and Mike Smith.
So, all our lists right now are bound to change.

If you're a subscriber to The Athletic, Duhatschek takes a look at what the Flames might do: https://theathletic.com/697931/2018/...draft-in-2021/
In sum, his projected protected players...
FORWARDS - Gaudreau
- Tkachuk
- Monahan
- Lindholm
- Bennett
- Dube
- Backlund (or Jankowski depending on how things progress over the next two seasons)
DEFENCE - Hanifin
- Valimaki
- Andersson
GOAL
At this early date, he picks Kylington as the player the Flames are most-likely to lose.

I'm not sure you protect Kylington over Hamonic (who I think will be re-signed) in that situation.

Identify who you might lose, trade them for picks, leave unprotected your undesirables?
Does that work?

Expansions drafts suck and this one is even worse being pushed out the extra year... it basically makes it impossible or improbable for the Flames to go after another talented forward without moving one out and they will probably also lose one of Dube/Backlund/Janko or Kylington/Gio/Hamonic/Brodie if the last two stick around.
It's an incentive against adding depth.
Pretty much ensures the Flames trade focus will be on goal tending if they are going to spend assets which I guess is the one good piece. Any teams with a good starter who have a stud prospect emerge will move a guy they probably wouldn't otherwise.
