Just read that entire thread. Yikes. I was adamant that Darryl would never trade Dion before it happened. Would still like to hear that story one day after everyone involved is out of the game.

One thing that struck me is how many freaking people that posted in that thread are now under lifetime suspensions. Had to be 20-25 of them. Must of been a lot of contentious issues going on around that time.

Someone who knows how should link McIndoe to the E=NG thread where CPers were the only people correctly predicting the way the Oilers season has played out.

He also played physical and was on track to be something very special. There were even some re-drafts in those three seasons with many people even outside Calgary saying he should have gone top 2 or 3 that year, perhaps even higher.

Dion just didn't develop after his tremendous start, so in hindsight, that trade wasn't so bad after all. It was absolutely horrid at the time based on value, however. It was definitely a poor value trade by Calgary at the time.
Dion was flourishing while playing with Roman Hamrlik. His learning curve diminished and he was never the same after the Flames traded Hamrlik.

He also got injured in the Anaheim series and was never the same. I think his hip limited his mobility which turned him into a PP guy instead of an elite all round giy

And I think he was paid big money too early in his career. Seems to me his play fell off a bit after the contract D Sutter gave him - Sutter thought Phaneuf was the next coming of Scott Stevens and I doubt he ever would have traded him for peanuts like that on his own doing.

To this day, i'm still convinced Sutter was told to move Phaneuf ASAP for off ice reasons. IIRC he wasn't even shopped around the league.

If I was a Flames reporter or on 960 I would have an account here to gauge the pulse of the fan base. The Oilers had employees posting on HF Oilers defending MacT so I'm sure most teams have people that are keeping tabs (not necessarily interacting) on the fans as any good business should be tracking customers.

The Blues had signed Shanahan as a restricted free agent, and under the rules at the time that meant they owed the Devils compensation. They offered a pretty darn good package of youngster Joseph and Rod Brind’Amour. But the Devils asked for Stevens, and an arbitrator agreed.
My mind is blown that this was a thing.
