Think a lot of it has to do with Montreal needing a bi-lingual coach.

If they falter down the stretch and wait until the offseason who is going to be available.

Best available French-Canadian coach was available right now, and they didn't want to miss out.

The real interesting move is could the Bruins have blocked the hiring? Could they have said "No, he's still under contract to us" and made them wait.

Guess that leaves them on the hook for $3M next year but would have been interesting.

Off the top of my head I'd say Claude Julien from the Devils in 2007.

I'm quite shocked and surprised by this move. Good for Montreal I guess.

Wait, so the Bruins had to give the Habs permission to hire Julien, right? What are they doing?

What, we didn't want to wait for him to run Patches and Price out of town too?

We call him MT, because that's what his skull is. Good riddance.

I thought the Bruins didn't have to give permission for the Habs to hire him, but that would mean they still had to pay out his contract (or something)

I'm dancing a friggin jig here.

I'm tired of hearing MT say "We just 'ave to play hockey da right way"

Your way isn't the right way.

Second time Julien has replaced Therrien as Habs head coach.

Therrien of course.... Realistically I'm not expecting to see any 'OMG we need to hire Therrien right now!' threads.

I guess that he's still under contract with the Bruins. When Gallant was fired,I think Vegas had to ask for permission to talk to him.

Yes they could have, but I am unaware of a situation where the firing team did.
For example, we had to give the Kings permission to talk to Darryl.
And yes, then the Bruins would still have been paying his salary.

A good way to burn bridges with coaches is to prevent one you just fired from landing another job.
