It is a huge story IMO. Lead story on ESPN in the US right now. And it could get bigger.

That's pretty impressive. I know the Sens have been downright terrible defensively, but he looks better than McDavid in terms of having an NHL style game. McDavid still tries to fly down the ice as fast as possible and then go to the net. Not a terrible game plan, but he rarely varies from that. Matthews does it in several different ways, and has good instincts for where to be without the puck.
I wouldn't be surprised if Matthews was the better player long term, even if both players end up being great. It's obviously too early to tell...

If he scores another, he ties a record for most goals in a game in a rookie season, as well as most points in first NHL game. Kid could walk away from this with 3 NHL records to his credit in his debut. Outstanding. Connor McWho?

Matthews deserves hype after this debut. Both Crosby and McDavid received way more hype before ever doing anything notable at the NHL level. Matthews just came in a got an NHL record in his first 2 period in his first game.

It's more a general hatred for the market the player plays in. Not the player himself. The media is never, ever going to stop Pumping up Matthews. Me, I'm just happy he's cast a shadow over the Oilers "next one" .
