How many has he even had? Wasn't the big one a misdiagnosis, because it turned out that his neck was hurt but he was having concussion symptoms?

He doesn't have to formally retire. Pull a Pronger and go on the "Long Term Injury Reserve" retirement route. Doesn't leave money on the table.
