I was giving my Edmonton fan friend a hard time about not getting any defense, and he was all "Demers is still there, we've got lots of time to sign him. Then we'll be okay."
HA!

Would leave Pysyk and Petrovic exposed.
Judging by the deal they just signed him to, if they were smart, they wouldn't protect Yandle.

18.35m for Ekblad, Yandle and Demers going forward. In comparison, the Flames pay 17.15m for Giordano, Brodie and Hamilton.

The Panthers also traded Kulikov who was probably #3/4 on their depth chart last year.

Out:
Campbell
Kulikov
Gudbranson
Mitchell

In:
Yandle
Demers
Pysyk

This is an excellent deal for the Panthers, Demers is a really good young (for a FA) D-man. Should have an opportunity to really shine and show his skills in Florida. They've been making some real solid moves lately, robbing Benning blind for McCann, shoring up the goaltending with Reimer and now this. Yandle contract could look really bad in a few years though (as opposed to moderately bad right now).

And reports (Chris Johnson on Twitter) he took less to go to Florida. Great for them.

I'd love Russell to sign in Edmonton. He is a bad dman and would help us in the long run.

I guess playing a pivotal role in getting the Flames to the 2nd round of the playoffs a year ago and bringing back Jokipakka, a prospect, and a 2nd round pick this year hasn't been helpful enough, right?

Interesting comparison. You could get in quite a debate about which is better value. Ekblad is a stud for sure, future Norris trophy winner... Hamiltons development could tilt in Flames favor.

Another solid contract for an UFA. Demers is a good 2-way middle pairing guy. That's pretty much the going rate for guys like him, if not a little less. I was worried about the defense when Mitchell went down this year, effectively retiring, and I was more than ready to move on from Campbell as he has become only moderately effective of late.

Should also remind everyone that Mike Matheson has likely earned a top 4 spot to start next year. With the addition of Yandle, this d-group is starting to really come together. Ian MacCoshen is close to joining the roster as well.

Ekblad-Yandle
Demers-Matheson
Petrovic-Pysyk
Kindl-Kampfer
MacCoshen

That's a pretty deep d-group.
