I read somewhere Toronto/Buffalo had to offer almost $3 million more a year to make it even with Tampa because of the taxes. It was always a pipe dream for those teams. Kudos to Stamkos for being smart.

I'm thinking sign-and-trade actually.

Toronto, Montreal and Edmonton all get punched in the balls, on the same day!

Dreams can come true!

This has to be a bit of a blow to the Leafs who were probably banking on him moving to the center of the universe.

Why would Stamkos agree to a sign and trade when he could wait two more days?

They just don't happen in the NHL.

More money. Tampa has the ability to sign for 8 years.

sign and trade has been suggested if he wants a 8 year term with another team.

only tampa can sign him to an 8 year deal until tomorrow.

Love it. Leafs fans have just assumed this was in the bag, so I'm glad to see there is one less chicken hatched than expected.

8x8.5? Thats the low end I think for Stammer. Glad he didn't go to T>O like a ton of folks said he was predestined for.

Canada's best hope are the Calgary Flames.

Honestly, we have the only competent GM in the NHL.

For those who wonder why Canadian teams haven't won the cup since 1993, just look at today's moves.

If you think about it, 8x$8.5M is only $2M less than 7x$10M over the term and after taxes are considered he actually comes out ahead.

Stammer got paid.

Stammer in 8 years at $8.5 is going to suck. He's not his former self.
