Jones has a lot of potential obviously but I think he's living off his draft status to an extent. The smart move would've been to bridge him but that would've been a no-go due the threat of an offer sheet. He hasn't shown yet that he is great offensively or defensively at this level, and he might never. Just because a player has potential doesn't mean he will realize it. The few times I've seen this kid, I've been underwhelmed but I may have been expecting too much given all the hype that has followed him. I think there's a decent chance that CBJ just overpaid for yet another average player on a long term contract here.

I think locking up young defensemen to long term deals before they've "proven" anything is a gamble worth taking. What kind of contact would we owe TJ Brodie if we had signed him to a bridge deal?

I would guess a 4.65x5 as in fact Brodie was signed to a 2 year bridge deal 2.125 x 2.

Jones has really not done much to justify that kind of investment from the team. If his offensive game doesn't develop over the next year or two it will be a pretty bad deal.

Too much money and term for someone who hasn't done much and has a few holes in his game.
It will pay off if he develops into the player he can be but by the time that happens he might be up for renewal again.

In his 41 games with Columbus he put up 20 pts 40 pts puts him 3 behind Dougie Hamilton .. Columbus did not run a system where scoring was designed to come from defensemen.
He is also 2 year younger than Hamilton.

Hamilton has also proven he can score 10+ goals a year in two different systems. Jones had a total of 3 goals last season between two teams. Not saying the talent isn't there but why rush to sign him long term at this point? For me, this was an easy target for a bridge deal on a team that already has cap concerns.

Jackets didn't have a choice....he was never going to get a bridge deal. Someone was going to sign him to an offer sheet if the BJs didn't pony up the cash.
Jackets traded Johansen for him and can't lose such a young promising defenseman.

Hamilton is a better player right now, probably by a fair bit.
But Jones does have all kinds of potential.
I think they're both fair numbers, though Jones' contract is a bit riskier.

Kinda sad that your overall evaluation of Hamilton is so skewed.
Hamilton is a brilliant young D who the Flames got at a very fair price and very good cap hit.

This was not knocking Hamilton's output... It was put out there as a poster was saying that Jones has to up his offense to get this kind of money...
He basically did just did 40 games at the Hamilton level....
I am not every going to argue that .5ppg is not an extremely talented offensive d-man.

You want to talk about points?
Dougie Hamilton has the second most points (85) of any D 23 or under over the last 2 regular seasons, behind John Klingberg.
To put it into perspective, Duncan Keith had 88 points the last 2 seasons.
So yes...Hamilton is extremely skilled.
