The better question is why?
We have guys that can play that role already.

Hitting machine! Can play regular minutes too. If Edm gets Lucic would should trade for Prout.

I'd like Martin if we moved out some dead weight to fit him in.
Dump a few of Wideman, Bollig, Raymond, and Smid... then we can talk about adding any UFAs.

He's the best hitter in the league, great agitator too. If you can get him at a reasonable price you do it. He'd make us harder to play against. And I think hitting is infectious and brings energy. I think seeing Martin and Hathaway hit everybody in sight would help Ferland stay more consistently physical.
I'd love Martin here. Defensemen would be scared to face Martin, Ferland, Hathaway, Bouma on different lines. They are going to rush passes which will lead to turnovers.
I'd love it.

We need a more effective bottom 6, Martin would be a step towards that.

Perhaps he'd be better than the guys we already have playing that role.

I'd sooner pay Martin 3M than Colborne, but yeah - wouldn't be overly pleased with either of those deals.

The more devastating hitters you have the more their defensemen rush their passes and screw up their outlets which means turnovers. You can wear down the opposition over the course of a game and especially over the course of a playoff series.
Why wouldn't you want more devastating hitters?

I would love more devastating hitters but not for 2+ million considering how many bottom 6 guys we currently have under contracts

No thanks. We need no more bottom six talent.

Martin is awesome. A surprisingly big contributor on that Islanders team. He is going to get paid

Yeah, I wouldn't be interested if that's the salary he's looking for.

Players like that are guys you develop in-house, then let other teams overpay on the free-agent market. They're a dime a dozen.

Craig Custance @CraigCustance
One scout on Matt Martin: "He’s big, he’s a lot more skilled than people think he is. He's an unbelievable team guy."
Craig Custance @CraigCustance
Get ready for Matt Martin to do really well in free agency. He's going to get paid more than people might think.

I think Brad is smarter than that. If he didn't qualify Colborne, he won't overpay for Martin. I'm not worried.

I think Martin gets close to 3m. When you have guys like Bouma and Dorsett making what they do it's hard to say he doesn't deserve it. I would take him in a heart beat if BT could make Bouma and Stajan go away.

He also has elite shot suppression numbers - he doesn't generate a ton of offense but the other team gets nothing when he is on the ice.
Physical, decent age, and can handle tough defensive match ups.
The key would be to not overspend - would be fine with a contract similar to Bouma but wouldn't want to pay long term or over $2M.

No to paying for 4th liners and 5th/6th defensemen. These guys need to come from the farm. Unless you find some value deal in September for 750k.
