Yeah, either would be good but I'd prefer Hayes for the spot on the Gaudreau line. 1 year younger, proven chemistry as Gaudreau's RW, better rate stat production last year.

I'd totally take Kreider if NY was unwilling to let Hayes go at a reasonable price (Although I think I'd slot him in with Bennett).

I would LOVE Kreider on this team. Kreider - Bennett - Ferland. Could score against first lines and agitate 4th lines! He isnt a world beater but I really enjoy watching him play and the intensity he brings to every shift when I've had a chance to see him.

I'd be over the moon with Hayes obviously but I dont think that would happen. It would probably take more than we're willing to give up. I remember how we were all praying he would sign in Calgary. I think if he ever moves - we will be at the top of his list of desired destinations simply because of Johnny and Billy.

BUT isn't that going to be every UFA list in future. No young players ever make it to UFA any more as the early UFA years are bought up in their 2nd contract. The only players that seem to make it to UFA are the overpaid/fading stars or 3rd/4th liners. There are the odd exceptions, with Stamkos this year being one, but they are few and far between, some would even argue that he is a fading star.

Well that would depend on whether how much you're willing to give up is also reasonable. I don't think we could get him for near free... but I don't think he would be overvalued by NY either. Hayes played 13 minutes a game last season that seems peculiarly low and he's also an RFA so he's going to start costing more money (and the Cap is a concern for the NY Rangers) so it strikes me as a good time for Calgary to try and strike a deal.

Do not want Ladd. Would rather get Hudler.

You'd rather have Hudler then Ladd??? That's... different.

Although frankly I don't think we'll have either, I think the only spot the Flames go UFA hunting is in net.

I think you're right. While I'd like to see the Flames add via FA, they'd need to shed some serious salary to do some serious shopping. Thats a tall order.

Signing both Helm and Ladd is next to impossible barring trades. I'm assuming you have Calgary dumping huge contracts so they have the cap space to make these signings.

In order for Calgary to make a run for one of the better non-goalie free agents, they're going to have to get rid of at least one bad contract.

Personally, I don't want to waste assets removing Raymond, Smid, Stajan, etc. Their contracts are ending sooner rather than later. We are a rebuilding team. We need to keep our assets. Trading Wideman makes the most sense, since he might have a little value. He also has the largest cap-hit.

Unless the Flames trade Wideman, I can't see them signing a good free agent (excluding goaltenders). They have to re-sign Gaudreau, Monahan, Colborne, and maybe others. They also have Gio's extension kicking in. If they trade for a goalie or sign Reimer, that's another 3-6 million gone.

Excluding the Giordano contract, the Flames have 25 million dollars in available cap space for the 16-17 season. I'm going to try to guess how much they'll have available to spend:
Gaudreau: 7.8 mill
Monahan: 6.2 mill
Colborne: 3.5 mill
Reimer/Andersen: 5 mill
Nakladal: 1.3 mill
Jooris: 1.2 mill
Other*: 2 mill

That leaves -2 million remaining with a 74 million dollar cap. Your opinion of the contract extensions probably differs from my own, but the Flames won't have much room anyway you look at it. If they trade Wideman, they might be able to sign someone with a similar cap-hit. Smid's health situation could also provide us with a bit more room, but I'm doubtful on that. Otherwise, I don't see Calgary being a big player in the free agency.

I haven't seen anyone talk about Loui Eriksson to the Flames... is there a reason people wouldn't want to see him in the Flaming C?

Most well rounded winger of the bunch IMO.

Only problem for me is he will be 31 this July, so signing him to a long term deal would be quite risky.

Only money. Most people think he will cash in on a cap unfriendly contract.

As you said, he's pretty well rounded. He's always been one of the most underrated forwards in the NHL.

That being said, it already looks like he's slowed down a bit since his Dallas days. He rebounded this year, but there is some risk moving forward.

I don't think the Flames will be signing Eriksson for the combination of his age, cap hit, and (somewhat lack of) truculence. But I would still be happy if they somehow got it done.

Wouldn't mind the Flames looking at Vrbata for that RW as a stop gap.

Burke/Nonis aren't the Leafs GM anymore. I have no idea why the Leafs would even think of signing those guys.

I do think Calgary tries to make something happen upfront which I think they may address via free agency. I think they trade for a goalie
