Smoke residue is orangey brown.

It's tar and chemical which seem to penetrate and bleed into the drywall, beyond the paint. Any kind of temperature or even moisture causes it to surface and wick out. It's gross.

My mom used to live in a tiny apartment, smoked like a chimney, and never opened the windows. She gave me a dresser out of there, and even though I smoked at the time, I couldn't believe how nasty the smell of smoke was on that goddamned thing. And since it was one of her "nice" pieces of furniture, I couldn't just go throw it out, or even give it back, because the reason she was happy to give it to me was because she didn't really have space for it, but she couldn't throw it out because she's a crazy old woman that refuses to throw anything out.

But no kidding. I had to put all the drawers on my balcony and leave the window open in my bedroom for about 3 weeks. I actually slept on the couch a bunch of nights because of it.

I bought a balsa RC plane from a guy who must have smoked like crazy. It was probably 8 years ago, but the thing still smells, strongly.

I also bought a used truck that was smoked in. Not horribly bad but absolutely noticeable. I shampooed the seats, cleaned the air vents, left dryer sheets and ground coffee in the cab. Apparently that works... I think the dryer sheets did the most, though. It is barely noticeable now.

I'd ask what check boxes did it tick that you can't get elsewhere; seeing as it's a buyer's market right now. If one of them is price; like this type of house normally goes for $500K, but this is listed for $450K- the smell of smoke might be the reason why.

If the sale price is low and clean-up was easy, the sellers would have done it to increase their price.

When it comes to buying a home I learned that you really need to love the house you are buying. If you don't- you will be still looking after you move in and going through the hassle and expense of moving again.

I recently moved back into a property I was renting. The former tenant was a smoker. I got the walls washed, the carpet cleaned, and rented the air scrubbers. It seemed to have worked, I don't notice any odors of smoke at all. If I could do it all over again I would have skipped the air scrubbers. I dont think they did anything. Wall washing, carpet cleaning seemed to do the trick.

years ago we hired some guy to come in and clean all of our walls, for the same reason, he was awesome and did a great job. Not sure what you can do if it is textured ceilings other than putting a few layers of Kilz.

Textured ceilings are best dealt with with a coat of oil based ceiling paint. That would seal out the smell no problem. Really brightens up the room too. It's amazing the difference it makes.

Yep nothing better than a Oil based flat paint for the ceiling.
