Considering the Flames actually own Adirondack, as much as they want.

The question is can/will the Flames offer him a NHL game and burn the 1st year of his contract like the Habs did with Lindgren

Maybe back-up. But a close to 50/50 split between the two goalies could be beneficial for both to ease into the pro game. Considering Gillies just had Hip surgery You don't really want to give him a heavy work load this early in his career.

Ending the season with 4 goalies on the roster would be amusing.

I think the only way he signs in Calgary is if they promise him they'll trade Gillies. Not so sure I'd do that.

I would think he would look at Calgary as the team where he would be the closest to the NHL.

NO starter

Ortio as the backup.

Gillies as the top prospect.

No team in the league would have less in his way to the show

First, ponder this. Are they signing a 10 year vet who is top 3 in the league at his position, or are they signing a player who has never played pro and was never drafted?

Now, what do you think?

I think we are closing in on the day where all 4 of our development league team goalie spots are taken by prospects. Lots of teams are going with prospect duos in the AHL now instead of the AHL vet. There's also over a dozen in the ECHL when even a half decade ago that was rare.

With the direction goaltending is going (parity). It might be a wise calculated risk to have 6 or even 7 of your 50 contracts used on goaltenders.

Haha yup.

1. Treliving starts season with 3 goalies.
2. Fans blame 3 goalie controversy for poor start to season.
3. Treliving ends season with 4 goalies.

He would back up Hiller (so he would play 55 minutes per game)

Makes me wonder if we would see a Gillies for Matt Murray (from the Penguins) swap, with Lyon getting top spot in the AHL

No way, Murray has more value than Gillies I'm afraid

Trade one of the top rated goaltending prospects in hockey, who is 22 years old, for a UFA college goaltender, who is 23? Makes all the sense in the world!

Murray has to clear waivers next year IIRC. Gillies doesn't. This could boild down to an asset management issue for the Pens. If I were the Flames I'd sit on Gillies.

You're talking about having a starting goaltender come straight out of college? Not so sure about that. Look at Matt O'Connor's struggles this year in the AHL. His numbers were pretty good in college last year, too.

I would think/hope that he'd expect to be in the AHL and to play a lot in the AHL. That's why going to a team that has a player like Gillies makes no sense because he'd have to split the games pretty close to the middle.
