When I was travelling in Australia in the late 90s they would occasionally have a check stop the morning after a big holiday or public event. They'd catch people still drunk from the night before.

My friend was hit by a driver who was still drunk from the night before. People think if they "sleep it off" they're good to go, but that's not always the case.

Horrible tragedy. Has any news outlet confirmed if alcohol was a factor? Drunk driving at 4pm Easter Sunday. That's sad.
On the news they said it would likely stay closed all night.

Hopefully they give him 5 years per person killed to reset the conversation on drunk driving. Its an absolute joke that so many drunk driving causing death cases only come with 1-3 years of jail time.

Its a high profile case - great chace to reset the national conversation.

Not far from where we used to live probably 150 yards over that wall. Harsh to say stettled in, this picture (taken by another "gawker", media or not) is pointed at the 5 foot wall bordering Lakeview, and anyone can basically hop over, and guaranteed some helped.

As for the accident, guaranteed it was a car coming off the S/B Crowchild off the small merge lane, to W/B Glenmore, and the truck, probably wanting to go to Richard road, didn't properly shoulder check...the ramp is angled so that its not a usual merge lane (ie its like the car is coming from above off the ramp) plus it's short and there's a curve ahead too. If said pickup driver had a few drinks, even worse for paying attention for a car coming from seemingly out of nowhere if he's realizing late that he has to be in the other lane, and a curve coming up as well.

There's enough right of way there for 3 lanes each way on Glenmore, a plan that has been in place for over 10 years (believe me I know) for the initial planned acceptance of the Ring Road as a feeder road (and predates the casino), but its another few years away.

There's been a few accidents there when we lived there, some crashes, some going off the road on their own. There's enough of a curve, for both that some can't negotiate (in winter or just plain can't drive or both)/and E/B drivers realize too late they need to be over in the right lane to get to Crowchild, as evidenced by the "new" part of the wall in that pic which is why I know how close that is to our old place - that wasn't fixed for 4 months around 2010.

i am going to guess he is goign to get soenthing like 4 years - and some of that will not be in jail.

seems sad to me that after all of these years people are still dieing from senseless accidents such as these and it almost seems pathethis that the national conversation needs to be reset

The trolls at Checker Cabs/Ready To Engage were quick to take advantage of a drunk driver to push their goals. Though they, of course, later deleted the tweet:

That group is the Mercedes driving old, rich, white guys in Eagle Ridge who oppose the SW BRT. And in this case, they are complaining because the plan is to add a bus-only lane on Glenmore between the 14 Street and Crowchild exits. Never mind that this crash happened in a location that won't be affected in any way by the BRT route.

That is the group opposed to the SW transitway. It's disgusting that they are using this tragedy as a jumping off point. I will never use Checker Cabs again. I hope more people do the same.

A pathetic group of nimbys who hate transit and things that are good for other people... basically. They oppose the BRT (which, funny enough, doesn't actually go that far), as well as (I assume) public healthcare, shelters for abused women, and the innocent laughter of children.

Surprised there isn't a cable barrier along this stretch of Glenmore. A lot of people have trouble negotiating the curve there and the speeds are 80+ in both directions.

I know they're a bunch of grumpy, rich, old nimbys, but what's their connection to Checker Cabs?

Oh god, please don't give me another reason to hate cab companies.

Pretty shameful to use this accident to further their agenda regardless of which side of the BRT debate you're on.

It has been mentioned on CP that Checker Cabs has organized Ready To Engage and have Rick Donkers speaking on their behalf. I don't care what their reasoning behind it is. If they are trying to further their agenda using the death of an innocent person as a jumping off point then I want nothing to do with them.

The owner of Checker Cabs is a major cog in Ready to Engage and he is using company resources to promote it.
