Ortio first off the ice. He'll get the start tonight vs. San Jose. #Flames

I almost wonder if the Flames broke up Giordano and Brodie to give Brodie a chance to make the world cup team.
Lots of talk about lefties and righties and the right mix, maybe getting Brodie back to the left side gives him a chance as I guess he won't make it as a left shooting right defenseman.

I doubt that was the primary motivation. I think the times we've paired two lefties together (Gio/Brodie) AND two righties together (Engelland/Hamilton lately) has made the coaches and management question the pairings. With Wideman coming back soon the problem doesn't go away, in fact we get another righty.
Righties: Hamilton, Engelland, Nakladal, Wideman
Lefties: Gio, Brodie, Jokipakka, (Wotherspoon on emergency recall)
So when we have more righties than lefties I don't think we can afford to be pairing two lefties together.

It may have had a little to do with it, but the remainder of the season is time for experimenting.
Giordano and Brodie aren't going to be together forever, so let's see what some other things look like.

Your write-ups are the best I've ever seen on this site and that includes the site owner himself (with all due respect ). Do not apologize and thanks for taking the time to do them.
GFG!

However the whole exercise is a little bit moot at the moment because with Nakladal and Wideman out we only have two righties (Hamilton and Engelland) so two lefties are going to have to play together. Because of that I wonder if they'll re-unite Gio and Brodie just until Nakladal or Wideman is back.
Gio-Brodie
Jokipakka-Hamilton
Wotherspoon-Engelland
You could switch Spoon and Joki but I think its more likely this way.

righties/lefties - whatever
my point is that this is the time of the season to experiment. Got to try and see what the unknown guys can bring. I cant say that I have been dissapointed in what I have seen so far from Nakadal, Wotherspoon and Jokipakka. Let them kill some penalties - we suck at that. Let them play unsheltered minutes.

I think they used Kevin on the PK, and they certainly used Nakladal on the power play.

We need to be auditioning players to join Hamilton on the 2nd D pairing. We can now do so without worrying about whether we win games.

IMO it may have to do with the fact they were both struggling of late defensively as from what I have seen Hartley isn't much for experimentation (outside of Bennett at center) and is more results oriented. When lines are struggling he changes things up to get guys going.

Well lefties/righties factors in to how they build the pairings so it does matter.
Wotherspoon and Jokipakka have been playing PK with Engelland. They've looked decent IMO. Nakladal is being used on the PP quite heavily.
They are playing unsheltered minutes. Sheltered minutes would be like 6 minutes. They are getting way more than that.

No, the crazy amount of goals and 6-5 nail biting win when the games actually mattered.

You can pretend all you want, but the games haven't really been meaningful since like late December at best.

I agree with this. They have been struggling for a few games now, separate them for a bit, and it lets Hamilton play against some tougher competition with TJ which is good for his development
