I think the reason Reimer got moved is because according to the media he is looking for a long term deal at $6M per which imo is asking at least 1M too much a year. Would also explain why BT didn't try and bring him in, why give up assets for a guy that will go UFA and have to settle for less than his current contract demands?

True, but even with hindsight there isn't an obvious scenario where things went much differently. A Ramo/Ortio tandem would not have been any better, but it might have freed up the opportunity to bring someone else in once the disaster became apparent.

Reimer's agent shot that down. Also, the "media member" who reported that was Damien Cox, so... yeah.

I would take him on a short "show me" deal, but I sure hope they don't throw a tonne of money at another back-up in hopes they can be a starter.

To me Reimer looks like the logical choice. Good stats and a UFA so he won't cost anything but money. Of course Reimer or the Flames may not see it that way, or he may want too much money. Out of curiosity what other teams are looking for a #1 goalie?

i don't want him....
and I can't put my finger on exactly why. maybe it's just the Leaf stink on him...
Maybe he's exactly what we need. But I still can't shake the feeling that he's not an answer

Calgary and Carolina are the only teams I can think of that won't have a #1 or at least a passable 1A/1B tandem next year.

These are reimers save % since his rookie season in 2010 on a tirefire toronto team. I think he would be a huge upgrade.

0.924
0.911
0.907
0.918
and 0.946 with san jose so far

That .918 would have Flames level with LA I think.

Totally agree with FlamesAddiction - short term 'show-me' contract.
Maybe it was the media pressure in Toronto, but what I have seen from Reimer is inconsistency. He can look like a very competent starter - even a very good starter - for even a good length of time, and then he implodes. To me, that is almost a dime-a-dozen in terms of quality.
The most difficult thing to do as a goalie is give consistently good performances. That is what separates a starter from a back-up or even a back-up vs AHL-caliber.
Reimer is at best worth a short-term, low dollar contract to see how he responds - and a lot of that has to do with the Flames not needing to spend assets in acquiring him in the first place. Hopefully they can find someone better, even if they have to spend some assets to do so.

The question of running with Reimer/Ortio next year isn't whether they're better than Ramo/Hiller this year. That one is pretty much affirmed before they even take the ice. The question is can either goalie be the guy that gets the team into the playoffs. That's the harder question for me as I'm not convinced on either when it comes to crunch time.

.914 career save percentage which is actually pretty good considering the teams that he has played on, especially in that media market.
Media was always all over him too but stayed strong mentally the whole time and kept fighting through it even though he was always deemed "not good enough".
Would have no issues with him on a 2 to 3 year deal for around $4 million per.

The Flames netminders have combined to surrender 196 goals on 1947 shots.
If you replace the sv% to .918 from .899 (combined that's what it is between them), then the goals against drops from 196 to 160. Assuming the Flames would surrender less than 13 empty net goals as well, say cutting that in half to 6, the Flames would have a +15 goal differential. That's the same differential as Nashville, better than Anaheim, Colorado, Minnesota and only slightly worse than either SJ or LA.
So we would at least be in the talk of a wild card spot if that were the case.

I think a Reimer/Ortio tandem would be sufficient to make the playoffs if the team is also improved in other areas. I think we need to add two scoring wingers, if we draft top 5 we may get one of them that way. We may be able to get away without adding a top 4 defensemen and instead promote one of Jokipakka, Wotherspoon and Nakladal to that role.

0.914 save percentage playing behind AHL quality defence is pretty damn good.
I'd love to go into next season with a Reimer/Ortio duo.
