Someone recently listed the 1sts that have been traded since 2006. There is no declining trend, and last year tied for the highest number IIRC.

Four last year, three in 2014. Two in 2006.

Looking only at that final week before the deadline.

Until the draft odds improve, then I can't see how a draft pick appreciates.

That's always been the case, the ones that tried to buy their teams never managed anything. GM's are still willing to deal picks for players and depth at the deadline, that hasn't changed.

The draft odds have improved for this year's draft. It will be the first time that the lottery decides all of the top three picks.

Not saying Calgary should do this but do you think there is an opportunity for a team to take advantage of this situation?

If they forego paying top guys 6-10 million dollars and fill their team with 3-5 million dollar players. Would the depth be able to compensate for the lack of elite skill?

I don't think so. You need those depth guys for sure, but it's hard, really hard, to score in this league, and at the end of the day, you need goals to win.

I personally think it's up to the players to start taking less if they want to be part of championship teams.

Sure, you're worth $8+ on the open market, but if you want to be surrounded by decent depth, and not AHL scrubs, you need to take $6, or you just won't end up being competitive for any substantial length of time.

This is pure speculation. Nobody knows until the dominos really begin to fall.
