Gaudreau, Bennett, and Monahan on forward. Monahan is replaceable, but we would certainly need to find another centre before we could trade him for something else.
Brodie, Giordano, and Hamilton on D.
That is the core of our team. I believe we will end up keeping two of Bouma, Ferland, and Jooris, with Jooris being the guy on the outside. I think Ferland has top 6 potential, and I haven't been impressed with Jooris this year.
Colborne and Backlund won't be in the league in 4 years. I don't care to make any crass predictions other than this.

If he developed into a solid #6 while being somewhat of a PK specialist I would be extremely happy.

I sure hope ferland develops into one of our long term pieces. That would be huge for the future.

There are players that I am hopeful that will emerge, Kylington being #1 on my list. After that, everything is a toss up. Some players will be fine as a filler guy for the time being. The Flames need players to fill the rest of the spots either in the organization or through trade/UFA.
|
Nothing against Jankowski - but he's a hopeful more than a long term piece at this time. Lets let the guy play in the NHL before we declare him a long term piece of the puzzle.

3 years from now...
Centres
Monahan - Bennett- Jankowski - Arnold
Left Wing
Gaudreau - Klimchuk - Bouma - Mangniapane
Right Wing
Frolik - Ferland - Poirier - Smith
Defence
Giordano - Brodie - Hamilton - Nakladal - Kylington - Morrison
Goal
Gilles - MacDonald
This is why I'm not overly bothered by trading pretty much anyone not on this list. I'm from the future, and this is the core of the Stanley Cup winning team. All players hit their ceilings. All Star game is Flames vs. the World.

11 prospects listed.
If six of those become players, the Flames will have knocked it out to the park.

It would be amazing to see a team where every single player (except Hamilton) was drafted or initially signed by the Flames.

Not really. Getting bottom F / D / Backup Goalies out of a prospect pool are an implicit expectation these days since the gap between AHL and NHL isn't significant enough to hold them back if they have the tools. Getting top 6 F / top 4 D / Starting Goalies out of a prospect pool is knocking it out of the park.
I'd argue failing to get NHL talent out of your prospect pool is something only the Oilers and Avs are guilty of in recent years.

CP only started doing these lists in 2013 so there is still one year to go to hit three years, but here's the 2013 list:
1. Monahan
2. Baertschi
3. Gaudreau
4. Gillies
5. Jankowski
6. Wotherspoon
7. Sieloff
8. Knight
9. Poirier
10.Klimchuck
11.Horak
12.Agostino
12.Granlund
14.Reinhart
15.Cundari
16.Ramage
17.Brossoit
18.Arnold
19.Breen
20.Berra
21.Bouma
22.Kanzig
23.Culkin
24.Hanowski
25.Kulak
26.Ferland
27.Roy
28.Harrison
29.Nemisz
30.Ortio
31.Billins
32.Rafikov
33.Deblouw
On the Flames currently you've got 5 NHLers - Monohan, Gaudreau, Bouma, Ferland, Granlund.
So you'd need six other guys to be full time Flames by this time next year to have 11 prospects from this list to match the 11 on that list. Seems wildly optimistic.

What throws a wrench into that is the fact that 2013 was when this rebuild started, and we sold off a lot of big money assets over that time (Tanguay, Iginla, Bouwmeester, Cammalleri, Sarich) and to hit the cap floor we brought in bottom 6ers / bottom D as placeholders. I think it's not especially "optimistic" to say six guys on that list you posted could replace Smid, Engelland, Raymond, Bollig, Colborne, Jones, and Russell once their deals expire. Which is a key factor.
Also three more of the guys on that list are in the NHL, just not for us - Baertschi, Berra, and Knight. It's unfair to dock points for someone failing to predict those guys would be directly replaced by Andersson, Smith, and Shore.

12 games out of 43 does not make Corbin Knight an NHLer.
Playing for the Canucks doesn't make Sven one either

Still has more points than Mason Raymond or Brandon Bollig in those 12 games.

Sven's a better NHLer than Raymond, Bollig, Colborne, etc and he was eveb when he couldn't crack our lineup.
The Canucks are also ahead of us in the standings.

Points be damned. Knight's not a full time NHLer. And he won't be ever.
The Canucks are ahead but are not as good. That's a fact.
And IMO Sven is not a better NHLer than any of those guys. Never was, never will be. I'd take any of them on my team over him. I'd also give Grant, Arnold, Shore and probably Poirier a spot before him.

How is that a "fact"? Take out 3 on 3/SO, which are a different sport from the sport that is competed for a Cup, and the Canucks are (W-L-T) 12-16-15 and the Flames are (W-L-T) 10-20-11. They've won more games in regulation, they've taken more games past regulation.
How are we "factually" better than them exactly?

I still think Knight will carve out a career as a 3rd/4th line center. Especially with his faceoff ability.
