My stepson is native and played minor hockey in Calgary during the 80s. Sometimes it was hard for me to tell whether team selections were based on race or just minor hockey politics but I tried to take the high road if there is one for those two choices. When it got to city teams in bantam, it seemed to be more who could play and not who was friends with who. Anyways I don't think he was ever harmed in any way because of his race, he just wanted to play and have fun and strive to be his best but later on he seemed to prefer playing for native teams such as the Hobbema Hawks. He's still involved, being a reserve councillor and running his local arena and hockey programs.
Having said that he had some fine coaches in Calgary who really took an interest in his hockey progress.
