After 20+ years of a clean record, this will likely be the 6th lost hull since BA38 in 2008. Crap? No. An unfortunate trend that hopefully reverses itself? Yes.

Wow, that is a scenario that is trained quite a bit, pretty wild seeing it happen for real.

As for the delay in evacuation, there are approx. 7 steps in the checklist to be completed prior to giving the evacuation command to the FA's.

The rough timeline from the initial event;
Stop the aircraft
Short PA to the cabin and contact with lead FA
then evacuation checklist which involves shutting down engines (don't want to suck survivors in) and depressurizing A/C so doors can be opened
Then once evacuation command is given, FA's would assess exits to ensure they are safe before opening doors.

Not a long time, but it seems like forever when watching smoke billowing around the airplane.

Also, keep in mind that the pilots can't see the smoke directly, and ATC didn't mention it, so it was likely once they talked with the back end that they were able to verify the severity of the situation and decide to begin the process of evacuating the passengers.

So looks like it was handled exactly as they had been trained.

Wow, that is very scary, glad to see everyone made it out alive. This reminded me of an air crash investigations on British Airtours Flight 28M where 55 people died on the Manchester Airport runway.

The lessons learnt from this incident such as checking wind direction before stopping, having plane interiors be fire resistant, and modifying the seat layout to increase evacuation time would have contributed to the successful evacuation today.

Almost exactly 10 years ago this happened in Toronto. Everyone survived, worse injuries than today, but I'm glad the plane wasn't consumed as it was here.

That BA38 accident was amazing in that everyone survived. http://www.theguardian.com/uk/2008/jan/18/world.theairlineindustry1

The other surprising thing was that there was no fire even though lots of fuel leaked out. https://assets.digital.cabinet-office.gov.uk/media/5422ec32e5274a13170000ed/S1-2008_G-YMMM.pdf

This is the second Boeing 777 to have a major fire while on the ground. The first was EgyptAir Flight 667 in 2011. http://aviation-safety.net/database/record.php?id=20110729-0
