Well thats a shame because it seems highly unlikely that they're going to get a second chance.

So I think you have to be careful about drawing conclusions there. Also, their CorsiFor numbers with him aren't that bad - all around 50. So I wouldn't make too much about that stat.
On the other hand, that Hero chart is pretty damning. Some ugly numbers there, making him look like a pretty weak 3rd line C.

It appears Benning is setting the team up in the event they probably tank as recent players he's brought in like Prust and Sutter are on the last year of their deals and it's likely the Canucks plan on being sellers at the deadline.

So if it's the pick from the Bieksa deal, they have effectively traded:
Bonino + Bieksa + Clendening > Sutter + 3rd

Yeah, it looks like he's preparing for the rebuild... bring in some grit to maintain order.
Not unlike Treliving signing Engelland and Bollig.
Plus, as you say, they have little left on their contracts.

My thoughts exactly.
They got worked and were shown to be a team on the decline. Benning is trying to change that.

I think it's because Bonino is an awful fit as a 3rd line C. Slow and not physical. Who knows what the brain-trust in Vancouver is doing. Like others said though, these guys will be attractive trade bait if Vancouver busts this year.

I love what's happening in Vancouver.
I don't know if they're going to be a free 2 points like Phoenix or Edmonton last season but they are trending more that way than playoff contention.

Sutter has been stuck behind Crosby and Malkin, just like Staal was. The Canucks probably think he'll be more effective with more icetime and a more prominent role. They'll probably be wrong, just like Carolina was with Staal.
Trading away futures to prepare for the rebuild? Or trading away futures to try and win next season? Neither makes sense.
Bad trade for Canucks.

I think they utilized him poorly. And now his stock has dropped.
Bet he has a resurgence in Pitt.

You might be alone on that one.
This deal seems very one sided. The consensus on HFBoards is that Bonino for Sutter straight up would still be in the Pens favor.
Vancouver fans aren't happy right now so I'm happy.
Sutter is also a UFA after next season. And Bonino is at 1.9m for 2 more seasons..

A bit OT, but who are the Nucks' Cs this year?
Last year it was:
Sedin
Bonino
Horvat
Mattius
Now it's:
Sedin
Horvat
Sutter
??

I think it's pretty even straight up. Depends on what type of player you want/need.
But overall, the trade is hard to get excited about, if you're a Nuck fan.

So while we're going for a speedy, high intensity all-around game, the Canucks are still trying to counter Ferland.
That's rather hilarious, actually.
In terms of scoring ability, the Canucks might well have downgraded.
Strange trade from Vancouver's perspective.

They are very comparable players with Bonino having glimpses of 2nd line offensive ability.
Then you look at Sutters 1 x 3.3mil Vs. Bonino 2 x 1.9 mil contracts.
Also note that Vancouver gave up a low prospect and better pick.
This trade is very 1 sided, regardless of how you slice it.
