Applying this to the incident last night, we need not pursue criminal charges against Ritchie, but what other enforcement methods can be invoked to prevent such dirty plays?

Also, thanks for the list Gio! I didn`t know there were so many instances where convictions were reached.
No one except the Crown "pursues" criminal charges in Canada. But go ahead and look into it some more.

That wasn't even during the game though.

It's really tough to pursue criminal charges for an incident happening during a sporting event. Has to do with case law which basically says participating in sports in implied consent to physical contact. Don't remember which case it is though.

Only extreme cases would be looked at, and last nights incident is far from extreme.

When I say "we" I didn't actually think we would march Ritchie to the courthouse with a noose in one hand and a pitchfork in the other. Or did I???

But seriously, the noose is just about ready.

If you were to give someone a "clean" bodycheck on the street, that is assault. Please don't open pandora's box or we will end up with flag hockey.

I don't understand why everyone freaked out over that hit. He got his hands up a little high, but I didn't think it was anywhere near as bad as most fans seems to think it was.

I thought a 2 minute penalty was all it warranted.

For example, Byfuglien's cross-check on Miller today was, in my mind, several orders of magnitude worse than Ritchie's hit on Monahan.

Agreed and though I think there's room for criminal investigations, monahan was a terrible example. Byfuglien is a better one.. he's pretty lucky to be skating away from that situation

If you are interested in reading a case that delves into consent and intent. Take the time to read R v Cey,

The elbow from Ritchie was dirty, but was nowhere near worthy of an assault charge. I would give him a two game suspension at most.

What Byfuglien did was worse, and I wouldn't consider it as assault either

It's no coincidence the majority of the assault charges in hockey relate to clubbing someone over the head with a stick, and not elbows, fists, knees, etc.

Looks like the Stars sent Ritchie down to the minors so I take that as a signal that no discipline is coming.

I really can't fathom that what Ritchie did only warrants a two minute minor. It could easily have finished Monahan off for the year (Smid was wiped out on a less dangerous play) and really is indefensible as I see it.
