GMs should stop handing out no-move-clause / no-trade-clause if they don't mean it. If they get Thornton to accept less money by giving him an NMC, and he doesn't want to waive it, that is the bed the GM made. As their Harvard delta kappa chums would say, deal wid it *****.

After the Sharks miss the playoffs for the first time in almost like forever, the dismantling begins...the Sharks have enough assets to get McDavid if they wanted to.

Diplomatically throwing your player under the bus is still throwing your player under the bus.

Both look stupid.
All comments that should be handled behind closed doors. I understand these season ticket holder events need some level of "insider" talk, but Wilson went too far there.

I do think that Joe doesn't get nearly enough respect for what he has brought to the Sharks. The guy is so damn good and does nothing but anchor the first line year after year and ultimately produce at an elite level, and his GM outlines in public why he was stripped of the captaincy, something that is always kept in house. Brutal from Wilson.

Totally agree, Joe makes players who have no business being on the first line into 50 goal scorers.

Eventually a couple of expansion teams will be added which will nestle the Oilers into 16th.

And he's spent a decade getting criticized for not caring enough when the playoffs roll around (a crazy notion in and of itself), and here's Doug Wilson telling us he stripped him of the captaincy because he cares too much!

I don't get this. This team has been consistently good for a long time. 10 seasons of making playoffs in a row. 2nd to detroits 23. Thornton has been driving force for at least half of those. They didn't win a cup obviously but have lost to some bloody good teams. Sharks have been a solid team for a long time and still has a decent mix of age through the lineup.
What's going on down here is a new owner is pressuring the GM. Wilson has had some issues with the coach. Now Wilson reveals a conversation about the C that should have been handled better in the summer and should have been kept private. Thornton knows Wilson is desperate and in trouble.
He just tried to push him off the cliff.

Honeymoon? The Sharks are that middle aged couple who try to sustain the delusion of romance by going to Swiss Chalet once a month and eating their meal in a silence heavy with resentment and despair.

Makes you wonder why Wilson said anything at this point. I thought the captaincy issue was non-news now. What was the point of making the statement months after?

He was asked the question at a STH Q&A session.

Full quote from Thornton
http://www.mercurynews.com/sharks/ci...oug-just-needs
Quote:
Long-simmering issues between Sharks general manager Doug Wilson and veteran center Joe Thornton boiled to the surface Friday when Thornton had a direct response to Wilson's latest explanation of why the 'C' was removed from his jersey.
"I think Doug just needs to shut his mouth," Thornton said after his team's morning practice. "I think that's the bottom line."
Thornton added: "All I've got to say is I've been here every day working hard. I haven't taken a sabbatical. He just needs to stop lying, shut his mouth."

The house cleaning is finally on the horizon for the Sharks. I have a feeling McLellan won't be unemployed more than a month and even Wilson should find work quickly as they did really good work. They didn't win a cup but they were a top team for a decade and that counts for something in a salary cap era. A really good team and organization that has just run it's course and I don't think that's a slight to either guy. I really hope these guys both don't pick up the phone when the Oilers come calling.
