The issue I have with any standalone is poor dynamic traffic info. Put a nüvi beside google maps (or waze) in traffic, and you will never go back to stand alone. My nüvi regularly reported, for example, 17 minutes travel time when google google maps accurately reports it as 40+ minutes, and then dynamically reroutes if better options are available.
If traffic is no issue, Garmin is indeed excellent.

Ooh, I'd like to pile on factory nav systems... The only thing the one in my Sierra is good for is the 1/2" lip on the screen frame and the fact that it's angled back towards the windshield, so when I need to use GPS, it holds my phone like a champ.

I do miss having a stand alone unit, though. I used to have the holder superglued up above my rearview mirror, then I had a 12v extension that I ran along the ceiling and down the A frame, behind the dash cover, and into one of the 12v jacks. The reason I did that was to keep it out of sight from car prowlers, because honestly, who the hell wants to bring that stupid thing in with them every night and every time they park somewhere for awhile?

Maybe I'm weird, but to me Waze and a GPS are really 2 different applications.

If I need to go somewhere that I have no idea how to get to, I'll use my standalone GPS. I find the moving map on a standalone GPS much easier to follow than the map apps I've tried on phones. Also, the bigger screen helps an old fart like me.
Especially in a foreign city. For critical navigation tasks a dedicated GPS, fixed in place, not gonna ring, or have any other interruptions is a must-have.

But if I'm in my city, and going to work or across town to an event, I want alerts about accidents, speed traps, construction zones, or any other traffic foulup, Waze running on my phone does the job nicely. But if I get a phone call, it's not gonna kill me to miss a warning.

Lane assist is awesome, letting you know to be in a particular lane for an upcoming exit etc. Another great feature of my last 2 Garmins, especially on big California freeways is when you get to a complex interchange, it'll show a picture of what it looks like, and your path to take.
