Yes sumps pump out ground water piped from the weeping tile also. They are flood protection and dampness protection.

The term "sump pump" does not distinguish between sewage or storm water, it can be either.

The sump is a containment, usually below grade. The pump is the pump inside the sump. This gives you "sump pump", and "lift station" is also an acceptable term that many people use.

And to echo what everybody is telling the OP, there is no issue with this installation in your house.

Again being a stickler, but who in Calgary on municipal sewer has a lifting station in their house? I have not once seen this. I have seen a lot of sumps connected to sewer though (totally against code, but never the less is done).

I am more of a suburban yop gobbler myself, so never in my own home. However my latte-sipping brother does, just as one example.

I guess the answer to your question is any building (house/parkade/etc.) where the lowest elevation of the building is lower than the sewer service from the street. So I imagine in many older neighbourhoods, particularly with in-fills.

As I said in my earlier post, a sump pump can be utilized for either sewage or storm water. It would then tie in to the appropriate city sewer or storm system, depending on how the sump is being used. So yes, there are lots of sewage sump pumps in Calgary that do tie into the sewer system, and it is all good by code.

This really has nothing to do with the pump and everything to do with the panel. The area in front and below the panel must be clear. I don't know the exact dimensions of the clear space but could easily find it. It is fine to have the pump, or any other appliance beside the panel.

I did a project up in Tuxedo that required a grinder. The house we tore down was a raised bungalow, so the services came in at around 5'. The 4plex we built had normal 8' basement, so we had to put in a grinder with a lift to get all that crap up to the sewage pipe. #### doesn't always flow downhill.

This is also correct, minimum 1 meter of clearance. The code rule specifically relating to it is 2-308(1) which states "a minimum working space of 1m with secure footing shall be provided and maintained about electrical equipment such as panel boards etc."

This has no bearing on whether or not the equipment is capable of working as intended. Ultimately this comes down to whatever the inspectors decision is. If they give you the green light for that location it would mean a deviation has been granted by rule 2-030.

TL : DR if the inspector is happy, it's fine.

I can show you 30+ houses in Marda Loop area alone with sewage lift stations. Custom built infills with very high basement ceilings achieved by digging a deeper hole way below city sewer lines.
